Morgan Gibbs-White injury latest: Nottingham Forest midfielder a doubt for Aston Villa clash

Stamford Bridge was the scene of celebration for Nottingham Forest following an emphatic 3-1 win over Chelsea, but the condition of talismanic midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White threatened to wipe the gloss off an impressive afternoon.

A brace from Taiwo Awoniyi and Igor Jesus' third Premier League goal in as many games saw a second-strong Forest record a vital victory in their quest for survival.

The result moves Vitor Pereira's men six points clear of West Ham in the relegation zone with three matches of the season remaining.

However, while there was an overall sense of euphoria at a seismic result, there was some concern from the Forest bench when Gibbs-White was forced to withdraw from the contest due to injury.

Gibbs-White, who was introduced as a second half substitute, was involved in a worrying clash of heads with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

The 26-year-old was seen with blood on his face whilst receiving treatment before he was subsequently taken off for Chris Wood.

Despite the alarming nature of the incident, Forest boss Pereira is optimistic Gibbs-White will be available to face Aston Villa in the Europa League semi-final second leg on Thursday.

“I am waiting. I am not a doctor," Pereira said. "Gibbs-White has a deep cut (just above the bridge of his nose). But he is a fighter. He has a strong mentality. I hope our medical team can do magic to put him in the right condition.

“I have told him he does not need to head the ball, he only needs to play. We will see.”

On whether Gibbs-White might have concussion, Pereira added: “No, no, no. I think no. I had a conversation with him and he was speaking normally; he remembers everything. The only thing is to look after his face and the pain of his injury."

Should Gibbs-White enter the concussion protocol then not only would his participation in Thursday's Europa League clash be in doubt, but he could also miss Forest's clash at home to Newcastle United on Sunday with the FA’s concussion guidelines state that the earliest a player can return to play is seven days after the incident.

Gibbs-White has been in scintillating form of late with eight goals and two assists in his last 10 appearances in all competitions.

The form of the former Wolves man has prompted suggestion of a possible England call-up for the World Cup this summer as the likes of Cole Palmer and Phil Foden fail to sparkle.

Gibbs-White's presence will be vital to Forest's chances of progressing to the Europa League final and the two-time European Cup winners are 4/6 favourites to reach the showpiece in Istanbul.
