Marcelino potential next club: Crystal Palace among rumoured destinations

Villarreal have announced that manager Marcelino will leave the club at the end of the season.

The 60-year-old boss is well into his second spell with the Castellon side and, courtesy of a 5-1 win over Levante on Saturday, secured UEFA Champions League football for next season.

Villarreal are in pole position to record a third-place finish behind Barcelona and Real Madrid, amassing a five-point cushion over Atletico Madrid who currently occupy fourth.

Their tally of 64 goals can only be matched by the front two in the division, owing mainly to a fantastic home record that has seen them win 14 of their 17 matches at the Estadio de la Ceramican so far this season.

Likely to have plenty of options, we take a look at where Marcelino might end up next season...

Crystal Palace

Oliver Glasner's impending departure will leave Crystal Palace without a manager heading into the summer and the availability of Marcelino couldn't have come at a better time.

Although he is yet to prove himself outside of his home country of Spain, Marcelino has proven time and time again that he is able to build a successful team when afforded time.

Not only has he been able to bring consistent European football to the clubs that he has managed, but he has also converted positive performances into trophies; winning the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana with Valencia and Athletic Club respectively.

Newcastle United

Should Eddie Howe leave the North East of England at the end of the season, then Marcelino should be a name high on the list of potential next managers.

Nobody would doubt that Howe has done an impressive job on Tyneside, however, he has struggled to eek out the consistency needed to turn Newcastle into UEFA Champions League regulars.

It's a brief that looks perfect for the skillset that Marcelino offers and Newcastle could do a lot worse than to hire the Spaniard this summer.

Napoli

Rumours regarding uncertainty over the future of Antonio Conte have refused to go away all season long and it is looking increasingly likely that he will leave the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona this summer.

The Napoli hot seat would be a positive next step in Marcelino's career and his ability to produce out consistent results should make appeal to a Napoli side who are faced with a competitive battle for qualify for UEFA Champions League football year on year.
