Manchester United to stick with Michael Carrick for Chelsea trip

Michael Carrick will remain charge of Manchester United, according to reports.

The 45-year-old's position has come under serious scrutiny over the last few weeks, with a dismal run of results coming alongside multiple high-profile outbursts from players, including club captain Bruno Fernandes.

Despite failing to win any of their last eight games, the Athletic's Laurie Whitwell has reported that Carrick will remain in post for this weekend's trip to Stamford Bridge.

Whitwell shared on X: "Michael Carrick will be given chance to turn results around. Carrick is taking training at Carrington, staff + players preparing #MUFC for Saturday trip to Chelsea.

"Carrick stays in charge of Manchester United after talks yesterday including Ratcliffe, Glazers, Berrada, Wilcox. Surprising call after Bournemouth but there is clarity now, in short-term at least. Fascinating few days ahead."

Already under enormous pressure, for some, Carrick's position in the Old Trafford dugout looked untenable following Sunday's 3-0 loss at home to Bournemouth.

The defeat leaves United just two places and one point above the relegation zone and reports soon followed that ex-Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and former Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann were under consideration to replace Carrick.

However, it now appears that Carrick will be afforded the chance to turnaround his side's fortunes after overseeing initial success last season.

The former Middlesbrough boss took over from Ruben Amorim in January, guiding United back into the Champions League and impressed so much that he was handed the reins on a permanent basis over the summer.

The recent downturn in results has led to both Lisandro Martinez and Fernandes to level criticism at both the club's hierarchy and the manager himself.

Although it was announced that Fernandes would remain as captain, Carrick did omit him from the starting XI against Bournemouth, asking him to warm up while opting not to bring him off the bench.

Manchester United are 31/10 to take all three points away from Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
