Lucas Herbert has tied the major championship scoring record with a superb round of 62 at The Open.
Herbert actually tied the record for the lowest nine-hole score at The Open going out in just 28 shots thanks to six birdies and three pars.
The nine-hole record of 28 was also set at Royal Birkdale in 1983 by Denis Durnian, as was the 18-hole record, by Branden Grace in 2017.
Herbert needed a round of eight-under-par to tie the record and got himself to seven-under with birdies on 11 and 12 before making two five-footers on 13 and 15 to stay bogey free.
The Australian then left himself seven feet to get to eight-under on the 16th which he duly made, leaving himself the par-5 17th and the demanding par-4 18th to tie or break the record.
Herbert would miss a 10-foot birdie putt on 17 and needed a par on the last to score the first 61 in major championship history. Missing the green with his second, Herbert left himself another five-footer for par but missed low, having to settle for a 62.
The baked-out Birkdale has played firm and fast over the first couple of days, but low winds have facilitated scoring, with Herbert taking the lead on eight-under-par.
Eight men had previously recorded scores of nine-under-par, but only five men had shot rounds of 62.
Grace was the first in 2017 with Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele shooting 62s at Los Angeles Country Club in the first round of the 2023 US Open. Schauffele then repeated the feat in 2024 in the opening round at the PGA Championship at Valhalla, with Shane Lowry following suit in the third round.
