Lewis Hamilton is priced at 6/1 to win Sunday's Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix after qualifying second to split the Mercedes duo of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
Russell appeared to have stormed to pole position in the Catalan capital as he posted a lap time three tenths quicker than his team-mate and title rival Antonelli, but a scintillating middle sector from Hamilton propelled him onto the front row as he crossed the line just six hundredths shy of his fellow Briton.
It will mark Hamilton's first grand prix front-row start since the 2024 British Grand Prix, but the seven-time world champion didn't envisage such a strong qualifying session earlier in the day.
The Ferrari star sat out the first practice session to allow development driver Dino Beganovic to get behind the wheel and Hamilton found himself on the back foot in the subsequent practice sessions as he struggled to match the pace of his team-mate Charles Leclerc.
But Hamilton admitted to having a total reset after FP3, and it paid dividends as he unearthed the speed to haul his Ferrari into the race-winning picture.
"I was easily 0.4-0.5secs off in final practice," Hamilton said. "I was thinking: 'Where am I going to get that pace?' I left the track between P3 and Q1, went back to my motorhome, and then Q1 I was first."
While Hamilton was basking in the glow of his sensational lap, in the other half of the Ferrari garage, Leclerc was left to rue a costly error in Q3 which resulted in him crashing into the barrier.
A thrilling climax to qualifying leads nicely into Sunday's grand prix and tyre degradation will be an important factor in the outcome at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Russell is the odds-on favourite to triumph after seemingly rediscovering his groove following a disastrous Monaco Grand Prix, while championship leader Antonelli is priced at 11/4 to secure a sixth successive victory.
But Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff conceded his former ally Hamilton is a major threat to the Silver Arrows' chances of success.
"My old friend... when people doubted whether he still had the speed, I've always said if he's in the right frame of mind and the car suits him, then he is to be reckoned with," Wolff told Sky Sports F1.
"You need to count him in and that's what he did today. If there isn't a tiny mistake at the end, he is a tenth-and-a-half quicker than us.
"I think it's going to play out in tyre degradation and we were quite good in the long run yesterday - but it all depends on the start.
"If Lewis is ahead after the start, that's going to be a tough one for everyone, so I'm really curious to see how that pans out."
