Due to a widespread lack of investment in the League of Ireland Premier Division, the league has never been awash with multi-million pound arrivals.
In fact, only one signing in the division has surpassed the €100k mark. With that said, we've compiled a list of the five most expensive signings in the history of Ireland's top flight.
Shamrock Rovers -> Derry City (2005)
After scoring seven goals and notching one assist for Shamrock Rovers, Derry City signed Paddy McCourt in the summer of 2005, fending off interest from Scottish outfit Livingston.
While McCourt's output left much to be desired upon signing for the club, he was part of a side that won three respective League of Ireland Cup honours, the FAI Cup and came runner-up in consecutive League of Ireland Premier Division campaigns.
Bray Wanderers -> Drogheda United (2006)
Eamon Zayed traded Bray Wanderers for Drogheda United in July 2006 on a two and a half-year full-time contract, scoring on his debut for the club.
He would go on to score 23 goals and record four assists for Drogheda, before being released of his contract in 2008 in the midst of the club's financial uncertainty.
Stal Mielec -> Sligo Rovers (2023)
Bogdan Vastsuk is the most recent signing to make the top five, becoming Sligo Rovers' most expensive arrival when joining from Polish side Stal Mielec in 2023.
His time in Ireland's top flight lasted just six months however, failing to register a goal contribution in eight games for the club and subsequently making the switch to Serbian outfit Vozdovac, where he experienced similar frustrations.
Chester City -> St Patrick's Athletic (2008)
Falling just shy of the €100k mark, Josh Murphy became the division's most expensive signing when joining St Patrick's Athletic from Chester for €90k in 2008.
A prolific goalscorer for Chester and Blackpool in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Murphy struggled to have in the same impact in his latter years at St Pat's, scoring two goals in four appearances.
Uniao Madeira -> Waterford United (2018)
Leading the way as the League of Ireland Premier Division's record signing, by some distance, is Angolan forward Rudy Wilson, who left Uniao Madeira to join Waterford United for a quarter of a million pounds in 2018.
Making just three appearances for the club, Wilson cost Waterford in excess of €80k every time he stepped on the field and left without scoring or assisting.
