The League of Ireland was founded in 1921 as a single division known as the A Division. Following the conclusion of the 1984–85 season, the League was restructured and the A Division was replaced by the Premier Division.

Shamrock Rovers are the most successful side in League of Ireland history with 22 titles - eight more than Dundalk and Shelbourne who both have 14 to their name.
