There are still five teams in the mix for relegation heading into the final day of the La Liga season.
With Oviedo already down, 18th and 19th spots are currently occupied by Mallorca and Girona, but with the latter pitted against Elche on the final day, they can save their skin with a victory.
While 13th place Sevilla and 14th place Alaves sit only three points above the final relegation place, the aforementioned clash between Elche and Girona means that their safety is already mathematically assured.
La Liga is slightly different to the Premier League because the tie-breaker for sides finishing with equal points is head-to-head record and not goal difference.
Played | Won | Drawn | Lost | Goal Difference | Points | |
13 - Sevilla | 37 | 12 | 7 | 18 | -13 | 43 |
14 - Alaves | 37 | 11 | 10 | 16 | -11 | 43 |
15 - Levante | 37 | 42 | 9 | 17 | -13 | 42 |
16 - Osasuna | 37 | 11 | 9 | 17 | -5 | 42 |
17 - Elche | 37 | 10 | 12 | 15 | -8 | 42 |
18 - Girona | 37 | 9 | 13 | 15 | -16 | 40 |
19 - Mallorca | 37 | 10 | 9 | 18 | -13 | 39 |
20 - Oviedo (R) | 37 | 6 | 11 | 20 | -31 | 29 |
Mallorca are in deep trouble heading into the weekend but do play already relegated Oviedo at home.
They must win at the Son Moix and hope that Girona beat Elche, Getafe get the better of Osasuna and Real Betis fail to win against Levante.
There a plenty of dominoes that need to fall into place here, but in the event that this does happen, then they would secure their La Liga status on a head-to-head three-way tie with Elche and Osasuna.
Girona's equation is simple, defeat Elche and stay up.
Should Elche avoid a loss against Girona, then they will retain their status as a La Liga club.
If they do lose to Girona, then they are likely down, however, there is the possibility that four sides tie on 42 points, also a path to safety for Elche.
This would require Mallorca beating Oviedo, Getafe defeating Osasuna and Levante losing to Betis.
Alessio Lisci’s side must get a result against Getafe to avoid relegation.
If they lose, then either the potential four-way tie with Levante, Mallorca and Elche or the three-way tie with Elche and Mallorca will see them suffer the drop.
Avoiding a loss against Real Betis will see Levante remain in La Liga.
However if they lose and Girona beat Elche, Oviedo avoid defeat against Mallorca and Getafe fail to win against Osasuna; Levante will be relegated because of their head-to-head record with Elche.
