West Ham have announced the signing of Joel Piroe from Leeds United on an initial season-long loan with obligation to buy.
The Hammers have been in the market for a new centre forward throughout the summer window following the departure of Callum Wilson.
Taty Castellanos started up front as the club made their return to the Championship with a 2-2 draw against Burnley last weekend, but the Argentine has been linked with a move away from the London Stadium.
With bolstering his attacking options seemingly a necessity for Nuno Espirito Santo, West Ham moved to sign Piroe from Leeds, completing a season-long loan deal on Wednesday.
The Irons have an obligation to make the transfer permanent next summer.
Piroe arrives in East London possessing a second-tier record that is unmatched in recent history. No player has scored more Championship goals since his maiden campaign in 2021-22.
After joining Swansea City from Dutch giants PSV Piroe would prove an instant hit in South Wales, netting 22 goals in his first season in the English second tier before adding a further 19 the following year.
In August 2023 he joined Leeds and continued his prolific form, netting 19 times the following season as the club's top scorer as they were promoted back to the Premier League as champions.
The arrival of Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Elland Road saw Piroe relegated to a supporting role as Leeds managed to avoid the drop last season but the Suriname international will be chomping at the bit to get among the goals at West Ham.
Piroe is one of three West Ham players to be prominent in the Championship top goalscorer betting, with Castellanos also featuring and Jarrod Bowen among the favourites.
