After a cracking Dante meeting last week, York is back with a seven-race card on Saturday afternoon and Phill Anderson from the Racing Post supplies us with his best bets.
14:40 York- Vantheman @ 17/2
15:15 York - Miss Alpilles @ 9/2
16:25 York - Bridge Of Eagles @ 3/1
14:40 York- Vantheman @ 17/2
A low draw seemed to be an advantage for last week’s Dante meeting at York and one that can go well in the sprint handicap over the minimum trip is Vantheman.
Kevin Ryan’s sprinter has dropped down to a workable mark and took advantage of his rating when making all of the running in a competitive Sunday Series contest at Hamilton last weekend.
While sprint handicaps at York don’t usually lack pace, there aren’t many that like to front run in this field, so another uncontested lead could be on the cards, and with the help of the far side rail, there’s a chance he could be hard to catch.
Drying ground is also going to help this son of Invincible Army, and while he’s yet to win in seven previous visits to the Knavesmire, he went close at last year’s Dante meeting when doing best of those drawn in the double figures, while he’s run well on a couple of other occasions at this venue.
The 5lb penalty he has to carry is somewhat negated by the booking of talented apprentice, Jack Nicholls, who is good value for the 5lb he can still claim, while he’s had three winners from eight rides for Kevin Ryan - backing all of those rides would have produced a healthy level stakes profit.
With bet365 offering five places on the race, Vantheman makes plenty of appeal each-way.
15:15 York - Miss Alpilles @ 9/2
Danielle has clear form claims but she’s yet to show her best in these conditions and she may be worth taking on given that she’s currently odds-on with no rain in the forecast.
The one that appeals most is Ed Walker’s filly, Miss Alpilles, who was still on an upward trajectory at the back end of last season, following up a competitive Goodwood handicap success with a Listed win at Newmarket.
She had a stiff task on her return in the Sagaro Stakes with the likes of Sweet William and Caballo De Mar in opposition, but she beat the rest of the field home and the form has already been boosted by the runner-up.
With conditions in her favour on Saturday, she looks like the value play.
16:25 York - Bridge Of Eagles @ 3/1
This looks like it could be a three-year-old handicap to follow over the next few weeks with a few nice prospects lining up, perhaps none more so than Bridge Of Eagles.
He looked promising as a juvenile last year but took his form to a new level with a Goodwood handicap success on his return, possibly improving for a gelding procedure in the off-season.
He still looked a bit raw and inexperienced that day, racing keenly early on, but he knuckled down well in the closing stages, an effort worth marking up having come off a slow early pace.
That form has already been boosted with the runner-up and fifth both winning since and he deserves to be a clear favourite for this contest.
