Horse Racing Betting Tips for Royal Ascot on Tuesday 16th June

Royal Ascot gets underway on Tuesday, marking the arrival of Britain's most prestigious five-day racing carnival. Seven races are scheduled from the Berkshire track, including a trio of Group 1s, with the action getting under way at 14.30.

Racing Post tipster Marcus Buckland has provided three recommendations for the opening day’s action at Royal Ascot.

William Haggas landed a couple of notable handicaps at York on Saturday and he can get things off to the perfect start at this year’s Royal meeting courtesy of the highly progressive More Thunder.

The five-year-old has two lengths to make up on likely favourite Notable Speech from their meeting in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury last month but, with this track arguably playing more to the strengths of Haggas’s representative, it wouldn’t be a great surprise to see those tables turned.

The son of Night Of Thunder was rated just 87 at the beginning of last season, but he rattled off four wins from his first five outings, quickly propelling him from handicaps into pattern company.

His only defeat in that sequence came when beaten a head by Get It in the Wokingham over 6f at this meeting, though he’s clearly at his most effective over a 7f and this distance of a mile.

Charlie Fellowes’ Treasurer ran a pleasing race to finish fourth on his debut at Nottingham at the end of last month and warrants a small each-way interest at triple figure odds.

Weak in the betting ahead of his introduction (11s from 9s), the son of Persian Force was in the process of making a forward move under Rowan Scott when running out of racing room 2f out, losing ground and momentum when buffeted around.

His winning chance was gone at that point, but he knuckled down well under a mostly hands-and-heels ride inside the final furlong and was visibly gaining on the principals at the finish.

The Amo Racing-owned two-year-old is a half-brother to seven individual winners, a couple of them Listed-class as juveniles, and although this represents a tough assignment, he’s open to any amount of improvement and could very well reach the frame.

17:35 Royal Ascot (1m2f Wolferton Stakes - Listed) - Galen @ 17/2

There was only three-quarters of a length to separate Haatem and Galen in this contest 12 months ago and at the current odds, Joseph O’Brien’s charge represents the best value of that pair.

O’Brien also runs Adelaide River (Tom Marquand), but stable jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle has stayed loyal to the five-year-old, who has been off since disappointing in the Group 1 Neom Turf Cup in Saudi Arabia in February.

He’s not the easiest to win with, as his overall record of 3-17 highlights, but he’s largely consistent and has often run to Racing Post Ratings in excess of his current official mark of 114, with his best of 119 coming at this meeting last term.
