Andrew Balding's Quicken Away was a massive eyecatcher on his debut at Newbury last month and should prove hard to beat at Goodwood, providing he has learned from that experience.
The son of Frankel, who cost £500,000 as a yearling, was sent off favourite under Oisin Murphy at the Berkshire track, but missed the break and found himself with plenty to do.
He made excellent progress in the final furlong, but he ran green when initially brought under pressure and was not quite able to reel in the prominently ridden, once-raced King High.
Quicken Away only went down by a neck, running to a Racing Post Rating of 80 in the process, and will be tough to beat with that run behind him.
His stable has won this race twice in the last six years with Star Caliber (2020) and Caviar Heights (2023).
14:52 Leicester - Perfect Hope @ 5/2
Seven of the 10 runners in this nursery at Leicester are handicap debutants, so a watch in the market is advisable, but I was impressed by the run of Tom Ward’s Perfect Hope when second at Kempton last month and she could take a step forward on this more demanding track.
The daughter of Perfect Power had hinted at ability in novice company over 6f, twice at huge odds, but she is bred to appreciate 7f and potentially further.
She duly improved when upped in distance at Kempton, seeing her race out strongly behind well supported favourite Sakowin.
She has gone up 2lb to a mark of 61, but should be wiser for that outing and looks likely to relish this track’s stiff uphill finish.
17:00 Goodwood - Old Is Gold @ 10/3
Balding looks set to top and tail Goodwood’s seven-race card, with Old Is Gold holding strong claims judged on an unlucky defeat at York last time.
The three-year-old has won only one of his eight career starts, that success coming in a warm Beverley conditions race on his second start in the spring of last year when he beat Naval Light, Raakeb and Tropical Dreamer, who are now rated 88, 95 and 81 respectively.
He posted a career-best Racing Post Rating of 87 when third on his only previous visit to Goodwood and has run within 6lb of that in two of his three outings this season, including at York three weeks ago, when he saw little in the way of daylight in a first-time visor.
He has done much of his racing in Class 2 company, so should find this drop into a Class 4 much easier.
