There are four meetings scheduled across Britain and Ireland on Sunday, with the action taking place at Goodwood, Perth, Punchestown and Navan.
Racing Post tipster, Gary Savage, has provided three recommendations for the day's action, with two selections from Goodwood and one from Perth.
15:35 Goodwood - Plaid @ 5/1
16:10 Goodwood - Hermetic @ 5/1
16:27 Perth - Statuario @ 5/1
15:35 Goodwood - Plaid @ 5/1
This is an open looking three-year-old Listed race for fillies at Goodwood but it can pay to oppose those who have already chanced their arm in black type races with James Fanshawe’s lightly-raced Plaid.
The last two winners of this contest were stepping out of handicap company and Plaid will do the same after dotting up at Hamilton last time on her handicap debut.
That was only her fourth start, and although the form doesn’t amount to much, the way she won in a canter made the 14lb ratings rise look lenient, and the fact that Fanshawe is prepared to forego a crack at a valuable handicap from a good-looking mark is a tip in itself.
Although her dam was a sprinter, this daughter of Ghaiyyath relished the step up in trip to nine furlongs last time and another furlong for this race should suit her perfectly.
Fanshawe has a 16% strike-rate at Goodwood in the past five seasons and has his string in fine form, all of which bodes well for the chances of Plaid getting some much-sought-after black type.
16:10 Goodwood - Hermetic @ 5/1
It seems a long time since Hermetic went into the tracker after a promising stable debut at the Dante meeting, with a possible appearance in the Class 2 handicap scheduled for Haydock missed when half of that meeting was abandoned.
Ian Williams’ inmate skipped the rescheduled version at Carlisle thanks to good to firm ground, but with Goodwood having received plenty of rain this week, this two-mile contest should suit the ex-French four-year-old even better.
A well-bred product of the Wertheimer operation in France, his brother recently won a Group Two at Saint Cloud. He only hit the racecourse for the first time last June, but quickly racked up a couple of wins over 1m4f and 2m on soft ground.
Williams went to 105,000 euros to purchase the son of Sea The Stars last November and it looks money well spent based on his one start in Britain to date.
He was sent off at 20/1 for a big field handicap over 1m4f at York, and showed up well for a long time on unsuitably quick ground.
With Williams’ go-to jockey Billy Loughnane on board for this race, and with the trip and track looking ideal, he can start to climb the ranks for a trainer who is a dab hand with staying handicappers.
16:27 Perth - Statuario @ 5/1
This is a cracking renewal of the Perth Gold Cup, with plenty bringing smart recent form to the table, but it can pay to stick with the impressive course form of last year’s winner Statuario, who looked better than ever when dead-heating at this course in April.
That victory took his course record to an astonishing 7-10, with five of those wins coming over course and distance, and with four of those triumphs representing his four highest RPRs.
Although some of his best form is on a fast surface, he is more versatile regarding ground than first appears with his most recent victory at Perth coming on ground with a going stick reading of 6.1.
It is encouraging that the reading has been consistently faster than that this week as Perth has missed most of the rain that has fallen.
He cruised into the lead last time, only getting joined on the line by a vintage Sean Bowen drive on the well-handicapped American Mike, and having the champion back on board the selection for this race will do no harm.
Just 4lb higher (and 4lb higher than for last year’s win), that shouldn’t be enough to stop the 11-year-old imposing his will again under his absolute optimum conditions.
