Gary Savage's Horse Racing Betting Tips for Sunday 16th August

There are four meetings scheduled across Britain and Ireland on Sunday, two in each country; they go on the Flat at Southwell, Pontefract and the Curragh and over jumps at Tramore.

Racing Post tipster Gary Savage has three best bets for Sunday’s action, with a selection from Southwell and two from Pontefract.

Sunday's Horse Racing Betting Tips

15:40 Southwell - Shiplake @ 7/1
16:45 Pontefract - Sing The Blues @
15/2
18:45 Pontefract - Veblen Good @

Horse Racing

15:40 Southwell - Shiplake @ 7/1

While plenty of these are likely to be running on Tapeta because the long wait for easier turf shows no sign of abating, Kevin Philippart De Foy’s Shiplake returns here having produced his best form on this surface.

Those two career best runs came with back-to-back course-and-distance victories last winter, the latter of which in particular was a strikingly easy victory despite pulling hard and which was given a Racing Post rating of 98.

The 10lb he was raised for that win looked well within range on that performance, and after his attentions were switched to the turf for his last three runs he has been dropped a further 4lb.

Those runs, which were by no means poor, all came in fiercely competitive handicaps on fastish turf, and with the return to this track and trip and a good draw in his favour, and with doubts about many of his rivals’ abilities under today’s conditions, he can bring up a Southwell hat-trick.

16:45 Pontefract - Sing The Blues @ 15/2

A typically competitive Listed race for fillies and mares and, as often in these contests, there probably isn’t as much between the competitors as ratings might suggest.

Five fillies come into this with ratings over 100, but none of them have standout recent form claims and they are a combined 0-14 this season, with one of them making her seasonal debut.

There are a couple of three-year-olds taking a step up in grade after winning hot handicaps last time, and although Killavia looks like she can get black type at some stage it is Glorious Goodwood winner Sing The Blues who makes most appeal.

Martin Dunne’s filly was picked up for 6,000 guineas in July, a sum that looks incredibly well spent already as she has picked up over £38,000 in two wins at Newmarket and Goodwood since the purchase.

It looks notable that Cieren Fallon, who won on the filly when she was trained by William Haggas, has retained the ride, with the pair particularly impressive when well supported last time.

She travelled like a dream in a big field on the Sussex Downs, but having become short of room it was notable how tough she had to be to stick her head through when she and a rival headed for the same gap just over a furlong out.

Having seen off her side comfortably she had to knuckle down again to get the job done from a fast finisher on the near side and with the potential to improve again she can bridge the class gap and land this Listed contest.

18:45 Pontefract - Veblen Good @ 11/4

Having already shown a liking for this course and distance when winning from the rear here in April, David O’Meara’s Veblen Good can make the most of a slight drop in grade and a return to Pontefract to get back on the scoresheet.

That win came on his stable debut, having made the switch from Karl Burke for whom he also ran his best race over course and distance when second in a novice on his only other run here.

Since that seasonal debut he has struggled at Epsom on softer ground, but also put up three cracking efforts in tough handicaps on fast ground at Thirsk, Ayr and York.

The latter effort was particularly praiseworthy as it came in a 0-105, so a drop to a 0-90 should prove to his liking, and with all of those last three good efforts coming on straight tracks it is reasonable to expect his proven course form back round a bend at Pontefract to be enough to see him in front again.
