Jumps racing returns to Aintree this Sunday with the Old Roan taking centre stage on a seven-race card that gets under way at 12:40.
Phill Anderson of the Racing Post supplies us with his best bets for the Sunday's action at Aintree.
Phill Anderson's Sunday Horse Racing Betting Tips
12:40 Aintree - Serious Chat @ 12/1
13:15 Aintree - Le Roi Remi @ 9/2
15:00 Aintree - Imperial Saint @ 13/2
12:40 Aintree - Serious Chat @ 12/1
He may not be the best handicapped horse in the field but there are a few reasons to think that Serious Chat could run well in Sunday’s opener.
With plenty of rain around from Friday all the way through to racing on Sunday, it would be a surprise if the ground wasn’t at least soft, if not slower and Serious Chat has run two cracking races on the only two occasions he’s encountered slow ground.
The latest of those was when second at Haydock towards the end of last season when just touched off by Docpickedme before going one better on quicker ground next time out.
His previous effort on soft was a facile success at Doncaster and he’s clearly suited by flat, left-handed tracks.
The 10lb claim of promising conditional Harry Brown certainly helps on the handicapping front and with bet365 offering four places on the race, Serious Chat looks like the each-way value.
13:15 Aintree - Le Roi Remi @ 9/2
There are a few promising sorts in the maiden hurdle on Aintree’s card but Le Roi Remi looked really promising last season and might be the one worth chancing.
We know he goes well fresh after bolting up in a Sandown bumper last season on his rules debut and he wasn’t disgraced in two subsequent bumpers, notably the Grade 2 Aintree bumper when seventh of 20.
That race often works out well and he wasn’t seen to best effect that day and has always left the impression there would be plenty more to come over obstacles.
With this step up in trip likely to suit and the possibility of slower ground also helping, he may be capable of outrunning his odds.
15:00 Aintree - Imperial Saint @ 13/2
Course form often comes to the fore at Aintree, particularly on the Mildmay Course and Imperial Saint’s form reads 11125.
The ‘5’ came in last year’s renewal of this race when he was a long way below his best but he didn’t seem to be in love with the game that day when uncharacteristically reluctant to line-up.
He was set a couple of stiff tasks at the end of the campaign in the Ultima and the Grand National, the latter over a trip that was never sure to suit, but before last year’s effort in this contest, he had a good record fresh having either won or placed on previous seasonal reappearances.
His career best actually came at Cheltenham but it’s worth noting that effort came over this sort of trip on soft ground and he looks a bit overpriced all things considered at 13/2 with bet365 with an extra place on offer.
