The Shergar Cup meeting isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but there’s plenty to like about it if you enjoy betting in competitive handicaps and full fields for all six of Saturday’s races show how popular it is with owners and trainers.
The British and Irish jockeys have an advantage with their knowledge of Ascot while Christophe Lemaire is no stranger to the Berkshire venue and the Frenchman has picked up a good ride in the opening contest with Bolo Neighs.
Ralph Beckett’s sprinter has already run three cracking races at Ascot in his short career, winning over six furlongs on this year’s return, and his two runs in defeat have been promising, placing in a competitive six-furlong handicap last month before a big run over course and distance a fortnight ago.
That course-and-distance run is worth marking up having been first home on his side and he was unlucky that day with the race developing a long way out on the other side of the track.
He has been left on the same mark for that effort and there is pace drawn around him this time with All Ways Glamorous likely to give him a good tow from stall 11. Lemaire is also an excellent tactician so there is plenty in this gelding’s favour.
14:10 Ascot - Dancing In Paris @ 11/1
Trainer Ian Williams often targets this meeting and he has some fascinating runners for the stayers’ contest, which looks like a winnable heat.
At the prices, it may be worth taking a chance on Dancing In Paris who was only narrowly denied in last season’s Northumberland Plate from a 1lb lower mark (4lb better off with the winner Spirit Mixer for Saturday's contest) and he ran another cracking race at the trip on the Knavesmire at the Ebor meeting later in the campaign.
He has not been in the same form so far this season but has been improving with each outing and he probably needs to win this if he has any chance of getting into the Ebor.
Dancing In Paris may still have untapped potential at this sort of distance and at double figure odds, he is worth chancing each-way.
15:55 Ascot - Archers Bay @ 3/1
Ryan Moore is outstanding at Ascot and he has picked up a really interesting ride in the Classic.
Archers Bay has a progressive profile, winning on his return on the Rowley Mile and while things haven’t quite gone to plan since, there is a decent chance he is well-handicapped off a mark of 92.
He was no match for Ancient Egypt in Listed company second time out this campaign but that has proved to be smart form, with the winner going close in Group 1 company subsequently.
His next effort in the Italian Derby is worth excusing given that he didn’t look at home in the very testing conditions.
There are also excuses for his subsequent fourth in a Heritage Handicap at Newmarket when he was denied a clear run at a crucial stage, losing all momentum and it’s interesting that connections want to give him another chance at this sort of trip.
They clearly believe he is a Group horse in the making and with Ryan Moore now riding for the first time, he could take some stopping.
