The Racing Post's Phill Anderson has picked out three selections for the best of the action at Royal Ascot on Thursday, with the Gold Cup the feature race.
There is a quality seven-race card to take in on day three of the prestigious meeting, starting with the Chesham Stakes at 14:30 and concluding with the Buckingham Palace Stakes at 18:10.
16:15 Ascot - Carmers to win and each-way @ 18/1
16:50 Ascot - Outback Heat to win and each-way @ 9/1
18:10 Ascot - Great Acclaim to win and each-way @ 16/1
16:15 Ascot - Carmers to win and each-way @ 18/1
The Ascot Gold Cup looks a bit more open than the betting suggests and one that could be a bit overpriced from an each-way perspective is the Irish raider, Carmers.
He won his first three starts of last season, including a Queen's Vase success at this meeting and he had several of these rivals in behind when taking out that Group 2. He subsequently ran well over an insufficient trip in the Great Voltigeur when closing on the winner all the way to the line.
Soft ground was a feasible excuse in the St Leger when underperforming at the end of the campaign and it was a similar story at Navan on his return, but he got right back to form in Listed class at Down Royal last time out on his first try at two miles.
Stamina for this trip is the big question but he certainly wasn’t stopping at Down Royal and he may have found a new lease of life for a switch of headgear (blinkers to visor).
If he does see out this trip and continue on his upward trajectory, it’s easy to see him getting involved in what doesn’t look like the strongest renewal of the feature race of the week. He’s a standout price of 18/1 with bet365 and makes an each-way appeal.
16:50 Ascot - Outback Heat to win and each-way @ 9/1
Another selection with course form in the book is Outback Heat, who contests the Britannia on Thursday.
He looked promising when winning an all-weather maiden on debut before setting unsustainable fractions from the front at Yarmouth second time out, but he bounced back from that effort with a course-and-distance success.
He was patiently ridden that day, which could be the key to unlocking more improvement from him given that he was only doing enough in the finish and quicker ground is also likely to suit.
Given that he should get a decent pace to aim at and he’s been drawn around a few front runners, he looks overpriced each-way with bet365 offering six places on the race.
18:10 Ascot - Great Acclaim to win and each-way @ 16/1
It looks like a typically competitive renewal of the Buckingham Palace Stakes with a chance taken on Great Acclaim for Eve Johnston Houghton.
This five-year-old has gone close on each of his three course-and-distance starts, the latest when chasing home re-opposing The Wizard Of Eye in the Victoria Cup and he’s now 3lb better off at the weights with that rival.
The winner also had a clear run through that day, unlike the selection who had to make his challenge away from the favoured near rail and a repeat of that career best effort should be enough to put him firmly in the mix.
A high draw has also been an advantage in this contest down the years so there’s plenty in his favour from an each-way perspective with bet365 paying six places.
