The Galway Plate is the feature on day three at the Galway Festival and FUNICULI FUNICULA is entitled to be a warm favourite for Willie Mullins.
Funiculi Funicula was a classy novice hurdler in 2025, signing off his campaign with a good third to Honesty Policy in the Grade 1 Mersey Novices’ Hurdle.
It has taken a little while for the six-year-old to fulfil his potential over fences, but he’s found a significant chunk of improvement with every run and looked well ahead of his mark when landing a novice handicap chase with plenty under the bonnet at the Punchestown Festival.
Mullins has won that race with a host of future Grade 1 performers over the years, including the likes of Kemboy and Asterion Forlonge, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Funicula Funicula make his mark at a higher level eventually.
This probably isn’t a vintage Plate and it’s noteworthy that Paul Townend has chosen to ride him over four other Closutton contenders.
He won’t have any worries about this stiffer test of stamina and can prove himself well treated.

BARRY LYNDON also appeals as an each-way contender for Dermot McLoughlin, whose runners are always worth a look in Ireland’s big handicap chases.
McLoughlin sent out back-to-back Irish Grand National winners in 2021 and 2022 and Barry Lyndon is another lightly raced chaser on a sharp upward curve.
He also won at the Punchestown Festival, storming home from off the pace to capture a competitive handicap chase run in a strong time.
The fact he has won over further is a positive as this race demands a strong stayer.
He has more to offer fences and should have the race run to suit.

The other race I want to play in is the three-year-old mile handicap as MOONLIT SUN has excellent claims for Jessica Harrington, who is fresh from a Group 1 win in Germany with Hotazhell last weekend.
Harrington has won this twice since 2019 and Moonlit Sun’s profile is similar to her winner that season, Tauran Shaman, who was making her handicap debut after winning a maiden.
This filly caught the eye on her debut in a strong Naas maiden, making strong late headway for third behind two potential Group 1 fillies.
Sparan Nua wasn’t for catching, but she’s since been an unlucky third in the Irish Oaks and looks a Group 1 winner-in-waiting, while my selection’s stablemate was second and holds a Matron Stakes entry after dotting up by nine-and-a-half lengths in a Leopardstown maiden.
Moonlit Sun has been quite green in both of her races, suggesting she can improve plenty with experience once she matures, and she could rate a lot higher than a mark of 89.
Her next-time-out maiden victory was cosy enough in the end, despite the fact the fractions were steady and she wasn’t as well positioned as the first three to strike.
There’s clearly a big engine there and this well-bred Moyglare filly can show it at Galway.
