It is Caulfield Guineas weekend in Melbourne, with the Guineas being the feature Group 1 race on the card, while there is also Group 1, 2 and 3 racing action to take in.
Racing Post handicapper and tipster Jonny Pearson is on hand to talk you through his best bets, including a selection for the feature race itself.
04:00 Caulfield - Knight’s Choice each-way @ 9/1
05:50 Caulfield - Sheza Alibi to win @ 7/20
06:30 Caulfield - Warwoven to win @ 6/5
04:00 Caulfield - Knight’s Choice each-way @ 9/1
Our first selection comes in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes and it is 2024 Melbourne Cup winner Knight’s Choice who has our vote of confidence to return to winning ways.
Most recently he was seen in the Naturalism Stakes, and despite finishing ninth, ran a better race than his final placing might suggest. He was less than three lengths behind the winner, and wasn’t given a hard time over a trip short of his optimum.
The step up in trip here should bring further improvement, and provided he gets a good passage through from a low draw, which is entirely possible with Blake Shinn in the saddle, holds a very good chance of winning.
05:50 Caulfield - Sheza Alibi to win @ 7/20
Next we head to the Might And Power Stakes, and it is almost impossible to look beyond Sheza Alibi.
She is going to be a short price, but she has also been one of the standout horses in Australia for the past 12 months and this looks an ideal opportunity for her to achieve another victory.
She was beaten on reappearance over 7f by Autumn Glow, a defeat that was always likely, but has since gone back up to 1m and won a Group 1 impressively on her last start. She is stepping up another 2f here and this should bring out further improvement.
She has won on six of her last seven starts, and should make it seven from eight.
06:30 Caulfield - Warwoven to win @ 6/5
We finish up with the feature race, the Caulfield Guineas, and there could be a future champion here if history is anything to go by. Our selection is going to be Warwoven, who has been in good form of late, winning his last two starts and improving on each of those runs.
The one concern would be that all of his racing to date has been going right-handed, and he travels to Melbourne for the first time and will be going left-handed. However, provided he is able to overcome this, based on his run last time in the Golden Rose, is the one the rest of the field need to beat.
The time he won the Golden Rose was very good, and as long as he hasn’t regressed the rest of the field are likely to be racing for second.
Jonny Pearson is a handicapper for the Racing Post who has been in good form recently, tipping Daryz to win the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
04:00 Caulfield - Knight’s Choice each-way @ 9/1
05:50 Caulfield - Sheza Alibi to win @ 7/20
06:30 Caulfield - Warwoven to win @ 6/5
