Harry Kane is in pole position to be crowned the 2026 Ballon d'Or winner.
The 32-year-old marksman netted his 70th & 71st goals this season for club and country during England's comeback win over DR Congo in last 32 of the World Cup.
His clutch brace against the African side kept him in the hunt for the World Cup Golden Boot, an accolade he is bidding to win for the second time after netting six goals during the 2018 tournament in Russia.
If Kane is to strike gold again at international football's showpiece tournament then he will have to fend off a challenge from France forward Kylian Mbappe. Just one day prior to Kane's brace, Mbappe registered a double of his own during his country's 3-0 success over Sweden.
It took Mbappe's tally for the tournament up to six -- one more than Kane has managed -- as well as taking him past Miroslav Klose in the all-time World Cup goalscoring charts. At 3/1, he is Kane's main challenger to Ballon d'Or glory.
Also in the running for the prestigious award are Mbappe's international teammates Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise. The former scooped the Ballod d'Or in 2025 after a stunning campaign with Paris Saint-Germain whilst Olise has contributed heavily to a lot of the success that Kane has had at club level with Bayern Munich, racking up 26 assists in all competitions for the German outfit.
Sir Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan (twice) and Michael Owen are the only Englishman to lift the Ballon d'Or since its inception in 1953, with Jude Bellingham the sole English player to finish inside the top three across the last 20 years.
