Grimsby Town have received a £20,000 fine after fielding an ineligible player during their famous EFL Cup win against Manchester United.
The Mariners dumped United out of the competition on penalties after the game finished 2-2 after 90 minutes.
Manager David Artell turned to Clarke Oduor, who had joined on loan from Bradford City one day prior, after 73 minutes but it later transpired that the club had registered the player one minute after the 12:00 BST deadline had passed.
The breach of the rules was reported by Grimsby themselves and has resulted in a £10,000 fine with a further £10,000 suspended until next season.
The EFL adjudged Grimsby's breach of the rules as 'not deliberate with no intention to deceive or mislead'.
A statement released by Grimsby Town regarding the situation read: "The registration of Oduor was submitted to the EFL at one minute past the deadline and the issue was not immediately identified by the Club due to a computer problem being experienced at Grimsby."
"We accept the fine imposed and fully recognise the importance of adhering to competition rules and regulations.
"This mistake was not deliberate, and the Club acted transparently by self-reporting the breach as soon as it came to light.
"Since this incident, we have undertaken a thorough review of our processes and implemented strengthened measures to ensure it cannot happen again."
Oduor was the only Grimsby player who missed a penalty during their remarkable 12-11 shootout victory against Manchester United.
Fortunately for the 26-year-old it wouldn't prove too costly as misses from €149m duo Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo saw the home side prevail.
