Goalscoring goalkeepers are a novelty at any level of football, let alone the UEFA Champions League.
In total, four goalkeepers have combined to score six goals, and we've taken a look at the shot stoppers who have found the net in the prestigious competition.
Goalkeeper | Fixture | Date |
Hans-Jorg Butt | Hamburg 4-4 Bayer Leverkusen | 13 Sep 2000 |
Hans-Jorg Butt | Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 Juventus | 12 Mar 2002 |
Hans-Jorg Butt | Juventus 1-4 Bayern Munich | 8 Dec 2009 |
Sinan Bolat | Standard Liege 1-1 AZ Alkmaar | 9 Dec 2009 |
Vincent Enyeama | Hapoel Tel Aviv 1-3 Lyon | 29 Sep 2010 |
Ivan Provedel | Lazio 1-1 Atletico Madrid | 19 Sep 2023 |
One of football's most prolific goalkeepers, Butt scored a total of 32 goals in all competitions during his career, of which three came in the UEFA Champions League.
In fact, if Butt's marksmanship in the competition was not fascinating enough, all three of his goals came against the same opposition.
Juventus were his victims and the first goal came courtesy of a penalty for Hamburg in a 4-4 thriller in the 2000/01 Champions League group stage.
He struck again from 12 yards in the following season, though this time with Bayer Leverkusen. His third was another six years down the line as he notched Bayern Munich's first goal in a 4-1 comeback win over the Bianconeri.
Interestingly, while Hans-Jorg Butt scored the first three goals by a goalkeeper in the UEFA Champions League, Sinan Bolat was second, scoring his first the day after Butt scored his last.
The former Turkey international became the first goalkeeper to notch a non-penalty goal in the UEFA Champions League when he struck in Standard Liege's 1-1 draw with AZ Alkmaar in 2009.
With the game entering the 95th minute and Liege needing a goal to avoid finishing bottom of the group, Bolat leapt like a salmon to connect with an in-swinging cross and directed a bullet header into the top left corner.
The overjoyed goalkeeper proceeded to run the length of the pitch before knee sliding in front of the home supporters.
Following in the path of Butt, Enyeama had been installed as Hapoel Tel-Aviv's principal penalty taker and he was called into action in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League group stages against Lyon.
Hapoel were awarded the spot-kick and Enyeama converted with aplomb, sending Hugo Lloris the wrong way.
Despite Enyeama's attacking contribution, Lyon ultimately won the match 3-1.
It was not the only goal that Enyeama scored that season, either, as the Nigerian goalkeeper netted in a UEFA Champions League qualifier against RB Salzburg.
Provedel etched his name into the history books in the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League campaign when he emerged as Lazio's unlikely saviour in a group match against Atletico Madrid.
The Italian, who was also making his debut in the competition, darted towards the six-yard box and timed his run to perfection as he glanced Luis Alberto's inviting cross beyond Jan Oblak.
For those that believe in fate, Provedel wore the No.94 jersey, was born in 1994 and stood at a height of 1.94 metres, with 94:19 minutes on the clock when he scored.
