Cambridge United to beat Wimbledon @ 4/5
After a 1-1 draw at Oxford last time out, it’s just one defeat in the first seven games of the league campaign for Cambridge United, who now have a realistic opportunity to go top of the table this weekend.
It’s a new-look defence for the U’s, with Sam Curtis, Cathal Heffernan and Callum Perry all coming in on loan this summer, and they’ve settled in really well for Neil Harris’ side.
Meanwhile, attacking midfielder Ben Knight has been in sparkling form from the right hand side, and produced an emphatic, first-time finish at the Kassam Stadium.
I think the Abbey will be a very difficult place for teams to go this season, and I see that being true for Wimbledon. While they have kept five clean sheets in their first seven league games, I feel they struggle for creativity and firepower.
Plymouth Argyle to beat Burton Albion @ 8/13
We’re at a stage of the season where winning runs can count for a lot, and that’s been the case for Plymouth Argyle, who began with one win in four, but three straight wins have lifted Tom Cleverley’s side from 15th to 3rd within a fortnight.
Aribim Pepple already has three goals to his name, after a prolific second half of last season for the physical striker, but it does seem like Argyle have diversified from relying on individual goalscorers, with more players chipping in.
I think that strength in depth could prove pivotal against a Burton Albion side who only tend to have three or four players to bring off the bench who can influence game at this level, whereas Tom Cleverley has a full offering at his disposal.
The Brewers have had a surprisingly good start to the season, which puts them in the top half, but they do travel to Devon without a win in three.
Stockport County to beat Peterborough @ 4/11
Stockport only have 10 points to their name from their first seven games, but it’s hard to see why, because performances have probably merited about 16.
When County have won, they’ve tended to be dominant victories, whereas when they’ve dropped points, it’s accompanied the feeling that they were unlucky.
The Hatters recruited really well for the kind of stylistic rebuild they needed, as Oli Whatmuff, Kyron Gordon, Eoghan O’Connell, Mamadou Jobe and Harry Wood have all made positive impacts.
Bristol Rovers to beat Exeter City @ 8/11
After an excellent start to the season, Bristol Rovers have had a slight blip with back-to-back away defeats, and poor performances, giving Steve Evans’ side less room for error against Exeter.
I can see Fabrizio Cavegn coming in for Shaq Forde, and Joe Quigley for Ellis Harrison, for the Gas, to give them some firepower and a hold-up reference point respectively.
I see the required tweaks giving Rovers the ammunition they need to secure victory over Exeter, who are without an away point to their name.
The Grecians have had to go for back-up options in the transfer market, due to funds becoming available so late in the window – their budget is probably about a ninth of that of their hosts – and that’s bound to have an impact on the strength of their squad.
Grimsby Town to beat Newport County @ 4/5
Grimsby continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-0 victory over Crawley last weekend that, on performance, could easily have been a much greater margin of victory.
Finlay Cartwright looks another excellent addition for the Mariners, with the Middlesbrough loanee bringing some fine playmaking qualities from the right side of midfield.
The Mariners are so difficult to play against, because they have two strong runners in midfield in Kieran Green and Mark Shelton, who don’t give their opponents a moment’s peace.
Visitors Newport are winless since the opening day, and seem to have one of the weakest squads in the league – they looked dangerous on the opening day because of the raw pace of one or two attackers like Shaquille Gwengwe, but he’s just stepped up from step-3 football with Poole Town, and it probably wasn’t sustainable.
