We're only seven matches into the 2026/27 League Two season but the table is starting to take shape.
Unlike the Championship and League One where every team has tasted defeat, as many as four sides remain unbeaten in League Two.
Table-topping Barnet, with four wins from their opening seven matches, are closely trailed by Walsall and Grimsby Town, who are two points adrift of the pacesetters having recorded three wins and four draws.
Crewe Alexandra are the fourth unbeaten team, although five of their seven matches have ended in a draw, and yet the Railwaymen find themselves in ninth, only two points adrift of the automatic promotion places.
At the other end of the table, Crawley Town's struggles have continued with just one win from their opening seven, while three of the four teams that were relegated from League One last season find themselves in the bottom five of League Two: Exeter City in 20th, Northampton Town in 22nd and Port Vale in 23rd.
EFL expert Gab Sutton has been tracking all of the action in the fourth tier and pieced together his Team of the Season so far.
GK: Tom Booth (Crewe Alexandra)
Having conceded the second-fewest goals in League Two, so far this season, and made the second-most saves in the division, with 5 and 28 respectively, it’s been a near-perfect start to the season for Booth.
This was a big season for the homegrown goalkeeper, who may have been expecting to start behind Ian Lawlor in the pecking order, but is now proving his worth.
RB: Adam Senior (Barnet)
A centre-back by trade, Senior is adapting superbly to the needs of a right-back, such is the quality of Dean Brennan’s coaching.
The defender is used to the role now, having played there all of last season, and looks right at home – he already has two assists to his name this year.
CB: Maldini Kacurri (Grimsby Town)
Perfectly named for a defender, Maldini Kacurri has had an excellent start to the season with Grimsby, forging an uncompromising partnership with Cameron McJannet. The duo have been ever-presents as the Mariners have kept four clean sheets.
CB: Josh Stephenson (Crewe Alexandra)
Josh Stephenson has made the perfect start to his Crewe career after joining on loan from Brentford.
Quick and strong, with great reading of the game, the youngster makes the perfect foil for the more aggressive Luke Offord, or the more experienced Mickey Demetriou, and he can play at left-back when needed.
LB: Harry Boyes (York City)
Boyes has always had the stamina to get up and flank for 90 minutes from left-back, or left wing-back, and produce pin-point crosses, even if now is the first time we’re seeing that consistently in the Football League.
Harry will be buoyed by his excellent start, with two goals and four assists to his name from wing-back.
CM: Sven Sprangler (Walsall)
It’s a mystery how Sprangler hasn’t been discovered at higher levels before, and needed to go on loan to Newport in the second half of last season, where he was instrumental in instigating the Exiles’ survival.
The Austrian midfielder seems to love the blood-and-guts side of the game, spotting danger and snapping into challenges when needed, but he’s not bad on the ball either. He’s not Pirlo, but he pops it off nice and quickly, keeping the tempo up.
CM: Charlie Lakin (Barnet)
Some questioned whether Lakin would be able to replicate the kind of goalscoring form he enjoyed at Sutton in 2023/24, after a couple of goal-shy seasons at Walsall, bearing in mind he’s not the most technically creative midfielder in the world.
What’s become clear, however, is that while he ended up gravitating to a deeper role for the Saddlers, he’s benefited from the freedom to press from a more advanced position for the Bees – consequently, nobody’s scored more goals in the division than his six.
RW: Jake Evans (Cheltenham Town)
One of the surprising facets of Cheltenham’s season so far, is how quickly their attack has amalgamated, given that they only had two forward players going into the start of the season.
Yet late arrivals have settled in remarkably quickly, including Evans, who only turned 18 last month, already has five direct goal involvements, and has brought pace and skill on the right hand side for the Robins.
AM: Charlie McCann (Cheltenham Town)
When McCann first signed for Cheltenham, I expected him to play alongside Ben Stevenson at the base of midfield, and act as a box-to-box man behind an Isaac Hutchinson replacement, not as the creative No.10.
Instead, he’s been the 10 and has delivered wonderful goalscoring form, getting on the end of Evans’ cut-backs or Joe Tomlinson’s crosses to threaten the goal – he, too, has six for the season already.
It might’ve been an acceptable tally for the campaign, and it’s still only September.
LW: Alex Newby (York City)
Also on six goals for the season is Alex Newby, who has played as the left of two number 10s in Scott Lindsey’s 3-4-2-1, developed under Stuart Maynard.
As we saw at Rochdale, Newby has a lovely right foot, and is great at drifting in from the flanks and curling efforts at goal.
ST: Aaron Drinan (Swindon Town)
One of the big surprises of the League Two summer is that Swindon, with their off-field challenges, didn’t sell Aaron Drinan, their talisman from last season.
It may be that age, at 28, and a recent history of injuries, put off would-be suitors, who may have wanted bigger assets making the step up, but that’s worked for Ian Holloway’s side on the pitch, with Drinan scoring five goals in the first seven games, including a hat-trick against Colchester.
The Irishman has a terrific work ethic and is seeing the fruits of his labour.
Manager: Dean Brennan (Barnet)
With Irishman McCann and Evans also in this team of the season, the old Emerald Isle is well represented with Dean Brennan as manager.
A passionate character who wears his heart of his sleeve, Brennan benefits from the autonomy he has at Barnet, a club built around him, but there is also a tremendous amount of work that comes with running the entire footballing side of the club.
The 46-year-old has done a terrific job, and has the Bees unbeaten and top of the league – with key defender Nik Tavares still to return.
