Millwall to beat Bolton Wanderers – 19/20
Millwall have been humbled slightly after a bright start, as back-to-back wins made way for heavy back-to-back defeats, with a 5-1 loss at Southampton followed by a 3-0 midweek home defeat to Wrexham.
I have faith in Alex Neil to put things right, though, because I think his impeccable record at The Den, with a largely young side that’s still finding their way, deserves a bit of faith.
They’ve also improved their squad with the re-signing of Romain Esse, on loan from Crystal Palace, they’ve poached goalkeeper Fillip Marschall from Stevenage, and just got clearance for the acquisition of young winger Yanis Issouffou, of recent France Under-18s pedigree.
I’m backing the Lions to get back on track with a win over Bolton, who also travel to the capital of the back of successive defeats.
Bradford City to beat Mansfield Town @ 5/6
Like Millwall, Bradford City haven’t quite been able to build on their opening two wins, with Graham Alexander’s side subsequently losing to Plymouth Argyle and Cambridge.
That said, I think the Bantams have got more depth than they had last year, and the means to switch things up: it wouldn’t surprise me if Nick Powell, who has somewhat reinvented himself in his latter years, came in for target man Jake Beesley.
Visitors Mansfield have been something of a bag of revels so far, with a 5-2 thumping of promotion favourites Luton last Sunday followed by a 5-0 defeat at lesser-fancied Reading: the scoreline flattered the hosts, according to Nigel Clough, but it shows you don’t quite know what to expect from the Stags from one week to the next.
I do see them falling to defeat in their shortish jaunt to West Yorkshire, though, because I think Louis Reed might get overrun by the various forward-thinking midfielders the hosts possess.
Plymouth Argyle to win at Doncaster Rovers @ 7/4
Plymouth Argyle will be disappointed with four points from their first four games, as Tom Cleverley’s side are still settling on a new rhythm following some key exits, most notably top marksman Lorent Tolaj.
I do think the end of the transfer window will help Argyle, though, in taking some focus away from additions and putting it onto knuckling down and settling on a fresh dynamic.
Plus, the Pilgrims have the option to bring physical striker Aribim Pepple back into the XI, and I’m excited to see what sort of relationship he can strike up with dribbly attacking midfielder Bradley Ibrahim who, after an injury-hit second half of last season, could be like a new signing.
Doncaster have had an underwhelming start themselves, with three points from their first four, and need a performance to kick their season into life.
Barnet to win at Chesterfield @ 9/4
I’m surprised Barnet are as big as 9/4 because, after what they did to Salford on the opening day, I wouldn’t put them at that price for any league fixture at all.
The reason being, I actually think the theoretically tougher games will bring the best out of the Bees, and their intense, aggressive pressing style; the likes of Oisin Gallagher and Charlie Lakin will be much better when they’ve got something to press, than perhaps they will be when breaking a team down.
With that in mind, I see Dean Brennan’s side collecting all three points at Chesterfield, who probably have too good a squad not to play expansive football at home.
Plus, the Spireites have only won one of their first four games, and got held by Gillingham in midweek. The thought of 39-year-old centre half Kyle McFadzean dwelling on the ball would have Barnet’s more athletic attacking players, particularly super-sub Jack Maskell, licking their lips.
Maskell, by the way, is 11/5 to score anytime, or 7/1 to score last if you want to play on the substitute angle, with Kabongo Tshimanga likely to start.
Walsall to win at Exeter City @ 17/10
Exeter will be relieved to have four points to their name from their first four games, knowing it could’ve been a lot worse following a rocky summer.
The reality remains, however, that the deals of Jayden Wareham to Wycombe, and Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa to Saudi, didn’t happen until right at the end of the window, meaning the Grecians have gained vital revenue but without the time to do much with it.
As such, after a modest summer of business, it’s a question of keeping their heads above water until January, when they might be able to do more to help themselves pull clear.
It’s not the worst time to face City, then, and Walsall may benefit from that, as Lee Grant’s side look to build on an unbeaten start, as Sven Sprangler and Isaac Moore have already forged a great understanding in midfield.
