Portsmouth v Sheffield United Prediction: 2/1 Blades to put paid to Pompey

Sheffield United ended a run of three straight defeats when they returned from the international break with a 3-0 success over Lincoln City, and they will view a visit to Portsmouth as a good opportunity to give their season another boost.

Pompey had to come to terms with a 1-0 defeat to their arch-rivals Southampton last weekend and need to improve upon a record of just three victories in their last 12 games at Fratton Park if they are to avoid another underwhelming campaign in the Championship.

Portsmouth v Sheffield United Prediction

Best Bet: Sheffield United to win @ 2/1

A 1-0 defeat to Saints was a blow for Pompey, who have taken eight points from their opening seven Championship games and, with one win banked in their last six outings, they look vulnerable against the Blades on Wednesday.

They have finished 16th and 18th in the Championship since winning League One in 2024 and another season at the wrong end of the table probably beckons for a team who have won just three of their last 12 games at Fratton Park.

It has not been a happy hunting ground for the Blades in recent years - they have scored just twice on their last five visits - but they should be galvanised by Saturday's 3-0 win over Lincoln and look a decent price to build upon that success.

Alternative Bet: Patrick Bamford to score at any time @ 7/4

United striker Patrick Bamford is proving he is still able to perform well at Championship level at the age of 33 and this looks like a good opportunity for him to find the net in a second-tier match for the fifth time this season.

The former Leeds United striker was on target twice as the Blades ended their run of three straight defeats by beating Lincoln last week and they will be looking to him to provide the inspiration to catapult the South Yorkshire outfit up the table after they gained nine points from their opening nine matches.

Portsmouth v Sheffield United Bet Builder Tip

  • Adrian Segecic to have over 2.5 shots

  • Liam Kitching to be booked

  • Portsmouth to have most corners

    Pays 35/4

Adrian Segecic has found the net just twice for Pompey this term, with one of those goals coming in the EFL Cup defeat to West Ham back in August, but it has not been for the want of trying.

He has had at least three shots on goal in six of his nine appearances with 14 efforts coming in his four home games, so he could muster at least three against the Blades.

United defender Liam Kitching has received a yellow card in three of his five appearances since moving to Bramall Lane from last season's Championship winners Coventry City.

His third caution arrived in the 3-0 win over Lincoln on Saturday and it would not be a big surprise if the Republic of Ireland defender found himself in trouble once again.

The Blades have had just nine corners in their four league away games this term, so they may be unable to keep up with Pompey in the flag-kick count, as the home side have had a whopping 31 in their four league outings on their own patch.
