Scotland have tried and failed on eight occasions to advance beyond the World Cup group stage.
Their latest attempt commences against Haiti at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough in the early hours of Sunday in a contest which will be assessed by Racing Post football expert Dan Childs.
Twenty-eight years have passed since Scotland concluded their 1998 World Cup campaign with a 3-0 loss to Morocco.
However, they have made steady progress in recent years and were involved at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 where they failed to make it beyond the first phase.
Struggling in the group stages at major tournaments has been habitual for the Scots, whose main aim for this summer will be to break the cycle and get into the knockout rounds.
Clarke's side have been drawn in a tricky section alongside five-times winners Brazil and Morocco, who reached the semi-finals at the World Cup in 2022,
But third place could offer a route through to the round of 32 and everything could hinge of the clash with Haiti, who are back on the big stage for only the second time in their history,
Haiti's only previous World Cup experience was at West Germany 1974, where they lost all three games by an aggregate score of 14 goals to two.
However, they came through CONCACAF qualifying despite being unable to play on home soil and will be hoping to at least put their first World Cup point on the board.

Best Bet: Scotland -1 on Asian handicap @ 33/40
Scotland have been free-scoring in the warm-up games, winning 4-1 against Curacao and 4-0 against Bolivia and they can get their Group C campaign off to the perfect start with a wide-margin victory.
There has been a lot of talk about how they will handle the occasion of their first World Cup game in 28 years.
But they have assembled an experienced squad with leadership figures such as Scott McTominay, Andrew Robertson and John McGinn, who should ensure that the high standards from qualification are upheld.
Scotland finished top of their qualifying section, ahead of Denmark and Greece and should have nothing to fear from Haiti, who were far from fully convincing during their passage to the finals.
Haiti were housed in a soft section and finished narrowly ahead of Honduras despite taking one point from six against the central American side.
They face a huge step up in class and may struggle to avoid a series of heavy defeats.
Alternative Bet: Lawrence Shankland to score anytime @ 11/10
Scotland lacked a cutting edge at Euro 2024, where they scored just two goals, but they have looked more of a threat in recent times with Lawrence Shankland starting to show his quality.
Shankland, who recently left Hearts to join Rangers, has netted four times in his last three internationals and looks the man most likely to break Haitian resistance.
John McGinn to score or assist
Carlens Arcus to be carded
Over 2 goals
Pays 17/2
Scotland have a core of experienced players, including attacking midfielder McGinn, who arrives at the World Cup full of confidence after playing a key role in Aston Villa's Europa League triumph.
McGinn is a big-match player, as he showed by scoring twice in Villa's 4-0 triumph at home to Nottingham Forest in the Europa League semi-final, second leg.
He is the leading scorer in the Scotland squad and looks primed to make his mark in a high-scoring success.
McGinn is a feisty character, who could get into a running battle with tough tackling Haiti right back Carlens Arcus.
Both could catch the attention of Algerian referee Mustapha Ghorbal and Arcens may struggle to avoid a booking.
