Derby County's Patrick Agyemang ruled out of World Cup with ruptured Achilles

Patrick Agyemang has been ruled out of this summer's FIFA World Cup after the Derby County striker suffered a ruptured Achilles in the Championship fixture against Stoke City on Easter Monday.

The United States international left the pitch at Pride Park on a stretcher after he leapt to control the ball before landing awkwardly and collapsing to the ground with nobody around him.

Derby's medical staff were subsequently seen treating his left ankle and although Rams boss John Eustace attempted to allay fears when quizzed on the condition of his star striker, the club have now confirmed that Agyemang has suffered a ruptured Achilles which will force him to miss the World Cup in June.

An official club statement read: "The club will provide Patrick with the highest level of medical care and rehabilitation throughout his recovery.

"Everyone at Derby County is fully behind Patrick at this difficult time and will continue to support him every step of the way.

"As a result of this injury, Patrick will unfortunately miss this summer’s FIFA World Cup. At this stage it would be wrong to put a timeline on his recovery."

Championship

Agyemang's injury lay-off is set to be a major blow for both club and country, with Derby firmly in the Championship play-off mix and the United States preparing for a tournament where they are one of three host countries.

The 25-year-old has impressed during his first season in English football after joining Derby from Charlotte FC in July, netting 10 goals and registering three assists in 36 league appearances. Beyond his goal contributions, the striker was an instrumental figure in Derby's build-up play with his imposing strength and impressive speed.

Such form had attracted Premier League interest from Leeds United and Crystal Palace, with Derby braced for offers in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Agyemang had also been a regular in Mauricio Pochettino's USMNT squad, featuring off the bench in friendly defeats to Portugal and Belgium, the latter seeing him net a late consolation goal.

With Agyemang's absence for the summer tournament now confirmed, it means Monaco striker Folarin Balogun will likely lead the line for the United States with PSV Eindhoven's star forward Ricardo Pepi competing for a starting berth.

The United States feature in Group D at the World Cup alongside Paraguay, Australia and Turkey.

As for Derby, Eustace will take encouragement that Agyemang's replacement, Jaydon Banel, scored the opening goal in the Rams' 2-0 success over Stoke City.

The East Midlands outfit are currently eighth in the Championship, a point behind sixth-placed Wrexham having played a game more than their play-off rivals.

Up next for the Rams is a season-defining trip to the Hampshire coast to face Southampton, who also have their sights set on achieving a top six finishas we approach the closing stages of the campaign.
