Charlton Athletic v Bristol City Prediction: 5/4 Robins can gain the upper hand

Charlton Athletic set the pace in the Championship after winning their opening three games, but a 5-1 EFL Cup defeat at Tottenham Hotspur knocked the stuffing out of Nathan Jones’s team and they have gone five league games without success since.

That makes them vulnerable against Bristol City, who have already posted victories on visits to Preston North End and Burnley and should be able to blunt the Addicks, who are finding goals hard to come by.

Charlton Athletic v Bristol City Tips Summary

Best Bet - Bristol City to win @ 5/4
Alternative Bet - Rio Cardines to register an assist @ 10/3
Bet Builder - Under three goals, Lloyd Jones 1+ shots and Conor Coventry to be booked @ 29/4

Charlton Athletic v Bristol City Prediction

Best Bet: Bristol City to win @ 5/4

Charlton gained nine potentially vital points after winning their opening three matches of the Championship season, but the scale of the task to be comfortable in the second tier is beginning to hit home and they could be up against it when Bristol City visit The Valley.

Despite victories over Derby County, West Ham United and Preston North End, Charlton have scored just seven goals in eight games and they could be overpowered by visitors Bristol City.

The Addicks are on a five-match league run without a win, while City have already posted victories at Preston and Burnley and they were only denied all three points at Birmingham City by a late Blues penalty.

They look more likely to be a Championship force this term and can enhance their already impressive away form.

Alternative Bet: Rio Cardines to register an assist @ 10/3

Rio Cardines has taken the opportunity to join Bristol City on loan from Premier League Crystal Palace and it is safe to say that the temporary move is working out famously.

The 20-year-old is at Ashton Gate to earn valuable first-team experience before returning to the Eagles and he has been making the most of his chance.

No player in the Championship has had more than his six league assists and it is worth chancing that he can have an impact by setting up a goal at The Valley on Saturday.

Charlton Athletic v Bristol City Bet Builder Tip

  • Under three goals

  • Lloyd Jones to have a shot

  • Conor Coventry to be booked

    Pays 29/4

No team in the Championship have scored fewer goals in their opening eight games than Charlton’s total of seven and the Addicks have generally struggled in the final third under Nathan Jones, despite the manager leading them back into the second tier.

Their last two home games have both finished goalless so it looks unlikely that there will be a glut of goals in this one.

The home side’s chief threat comes from set pieces, which means towering central defender Lloyd Jones could have a prominent role to play.

He scored in the wins over Derby and West Ham at the start of the season and in the EFL Cup defeat to Tottenham and while another goal could prove to be a push, there is a decent chance he can have an attempt at goal.

Addicks midfielder Conor Coventry has had a busy international break with the Republic of Ireland, but he remains crucial to Jones’s midfield.

Coventry picked up a yellow card in his country’s 3-0 victory over Israel and while he has had just one league booking this season, he has committed a total of eight fouls in his last three Championship outings so he could be vulnerable to another caution.
