Burnley v West Ham Predictions: Irons 6/5 to make winning start in the Championship

Burnley and West Ham United face each other on the opening matchday of the Championship season, just a few months after playing each other in the Premier League.

The Turf Moor side finished 19th last season, 19 points from safety after yet another disappointing top-flight campaign.

West Ham haven't played in the Championship since 2012 and ambitions will be high that their stay will be a short one.

The Irons are favourites to get off to a winning start at Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon, especially after keeping two of their key attackers this summer.

Burnley v West Ham Tips Summary

Best Bet - West Ham to win @ 6/5
Alternative Bet - Jarrod Bowen to score at anytime @ 7/4
Bet Builder - Both teams to score, Over 2 goals & Taty Castellanos 2+ shots on target @ 7/2

Burnley v West Ham Prediction

Best Bet: West Ham to win @ 6/5

While Burnley are used to playing in the Championship in recent years, this is uncharted territory for this West Ham side.

In Nuno Espirito Santo, however, they have a manager who has previously succeeded in the second tier, leading Wolves to the title in 2018.

The Irons are favourites to seal an instant return to the Premier League and this opening clash against Burnley will be a big test of where they are right now.

Last season, West Ham won both meetings against Burnley, securing 2-0 and 3-2 victories. Indeed, the London club are on a six-year unbeaten streak against Burnley, who last won this fixture in July 2020.

Last week in the EFL Cup, West Ham defeated Portsmouth 3-1, while Burnley struggled to a 1-1 draw against Notts County, eventually prevailing on penalties.

Given the strength of their squad combined with an impressive head-to-head record against Burnley, West Ham should seal all three points at Turf Moor.

Alternative Bet: Jarrod Bowen to score at anytime @ 7/4

During his career, Jarrod Bowen has scored 52 goals across 117 Championship matches, indicating that he should be right at home in the second tier.

Despite the Irons struggling last season, Bowen still managed to score 11 goals, including nine in the top-flight and he has begun the current season well.

Against Portsmouth, Bowen netted West Ham's second of the afternoon, while also providing an assist in what was a solid performance all round.

However, Bowen has yet to score against Burnley across eight appearances but that could change on Sunday.

Burnley v West Ham Bet Builder Tip

  • Both teams to score

  • Over 2 goals

  • Taty Castellanos 2+ shots on target

    Pays 7/2

Five of the previous seven match-ups between these two sides have featured both teams scoring.

Across both of their opening EFL Cup matches of the season, both teams found the back of the net, as the Championship sides conceded once to teams from further down the pyramid.

In total, 20 of West Ham's 38 Premier League games last season involved both teams finding the back of the net.  For Burnley, 22 of their 38 games saw the same bet land.

With both teams desperate for a good start, chances at both ends should be plentiful.

In that regard, back over two goals is also a wise option for this bet builder.

Three of the last four games between the two sides has included three or more goals and half of Burnley's matches in the top-flight have finished with over two goals.

West Ham saw 22 of their 28 league games feature three or more goals and this match could produce the goods on Sunday afternoon.

Santo knows that Bowen will be a threat throughout the campaign, but so will Taty Castellanos.

The striker scored twice against Portsmouth last weekend. Across 18 league games after joining in January, he netted six times while averaging 1.2 shots on target per game.

He will be filled with confidence after his brace against Pompey and there is no doubt he will be a handful on Sunday.
