Everton 3-1 Newcastle United Stats and Timeline: Toffees one step closer to Wembley

Everton are one step closer to the EFL Cup final after defeating Newcastle United 3-1 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

7,732 Mags made the trip to Merseyside on Thursday night with the hope that Newcastle could progress to the quarter-finals and take one step closer to reclaiming the EFL Cup -- which they won in 2025 -- but it's Everton who booked their spot in the next round, where they will face League Two outfit Fleetwood Town.

Newcastle were competitive for the majority of the first half -- with Matthias Jaissle making just one change to the side that beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at the weekend -- but it was the hosts who took the lead.

The Magpies were careless with the ball in their defensive third and were dispossessed. Hayden Hackney threaded the ball through to James Garner, who still had a lot to do, and he curled a delightful right-footed effort into the bottom corner and past Lukas Hornicek.

Hackney -- who recorded an assist for the opener -- was on hand to double Everton's lead on the stroke of half time, latching onto Thierno Barry's perfectly weighted cross to steer home and worsen Newcastle's woes.

After making changes at the break, Newcastle looked as though they were getting back into the game in the early stages of the second half, but Barry's 69th minute dagger all but concluded the fourth round affair.

Dan Burn did notch a consolation for the visitors in the 89th minute -- sparking a goal-mouth squabble -- but it was not enough for Jaissle's side, who will be looking for a better result when they welcome Everton to St James' Park on Monday night.
