Two years after the start of professional football in the Netherlands, the Eredivisie was founded, with amateurs leagues operating prior to 1956.
The 1954/55 season was the first professional campaign in the Netherlands, split by divisions, with divisional winners competing in play-offs to determine the national champion.
In 1956, the Eredivisie was founded with 18 teams competing in a round robin format, playing home and away, with the format still in use today.
Ajax have been the dominant team in the Netherlands, particularly in the Eredivisie era, winning 28 titles to PSV's 22. Overall, Ajax are on 36 to PSV's 25, ahead of Feyenoord on 16.
While PSV had spells of dominance in the 1980s and 2000s, Ajax have been the most successful club of recent years, winning seven of the last 13 titles.

After their dominant title win last season, in which they won 29 out of 34 games, racking up a goal difference of +90, PSV Eindhoven are expected to go all the way again this time around and are big favourites.
Should they slip up, Feyenoord look best placed to capitalise, with Ajax distant second favourites.
