Former Birmingham City & Coventry defender completes Greek Super League switch

Greek Super League outfit Levadiakos have announced the signing of former England youth international Jonathan Panzo on a free transfer.

The 25-year-old defender returned to the EFL on a permanent basis when joining Birmingham City in the 2026 January transfer window, signing a short-term deal for the second half of the 2026/27 campaign.

He enjoyed a run of four consecutive Championship starts between gameweek 33 and gameweek 36 but failed to feature in any of Blues' last five second tier contests.

The club opted against extending the centre back's contract following the expiry of his short deal, and he is now set to embark on a new challenge with Levadiakos in Greece's top-flight.

Panzo was highly-rated when emerging through Chelsea' academy from 2010 to 2018, proven by his involvement in England's youth setup from the U16s up until the U21s.

The central defender was a part of the England squad that won the U17 World Cup, playing in a team alongside the likes of Marc Guehi, Phil Foden and Morgan Gibbs-White, all of whom have become Premier League stars.

Panzo hasn't quite had the same luck, however, suffering from premature European transfers and an inability to impress on numerous loan spells.

He left Chelsea for Ligue 1 outfit Monaco in 2018, where he made just two senior appearances before making the permanent switch to Dijon in 2020.

He enjoyed more first team football at Dijon -- playing 22 times in the 2020/21 Ligue 1 term -- but he was demoted to the reserve setup before permanently departing in 2022.

It was then Championship outfit Nottingham Forest who took a chance on him, where he played just once for the senior side before loan spells with Coventry City, Cardiff City, Standard Liege and Rio Ave.

A permanent switch to Rio Ave followed, and while he amounted 35 senior appearances, his stay at the club ended when signing for Birmingham just six months after joining the Primeira Liga outfit.

Panzo has undoubtedly suffered from a lack of stability in his career, playing no more than 35 games for one club, and he'll hope that his Levadiakos switch will be the turning point.
