England will play their eighth major tournament semi-final when locking horns with Argentina on Wednesday night.
The Three Lions needed extra-time to overcome Norway in the World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, and they will now be tasked with overcoming Lionel Scaloni's reigning champions in the final four encounter.
The Atlanta clash will mark England's fourth World Cup semi-final in 17 editions, adding to their four previous appearances in the European Championship semi-finals.
We take a look at their overall record in the semi-finals of major tournaments below...
England had to wait until 1966 to make their first major tournament semi-final appearance, having defeated Argentina in the World Cup quarter-finals to book their place in the final four -- where Portugal would await.
They proved too good for Otto Gloria's side too, with a Bobby Charlton brace firing the Three Lions over the line, despite an 83rd minute consolation from all-time great Eusebio.
Their first taste of semi-final success was followed by an even greater triumph, defeating West Germany 4-2 in the final to clinch the World Cup -- something that they've failed to replicate since.
Major tournament success was coming thick and fast for England, reaching the final four of the Euros in 1968, just two years after taking home the Jules Rimet Trophy. They wouldn't enjoy the same luck this time round however, losing to Yugoslavia 1-0 inside 90 minutes.
After 22 years of hurt -- which saw England miss out on numerous major tournaments -- they returned to the semi-finals against Germany at the 1990 World Cup, where they lost 4-3 on penalties after playing out a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes.
England were hit with a strong sense of deja vu as they crashed out of the 1996 Euros to Germany -- once again on penalties -- and another 22-year semi-final drought would follow.
After losing the 2018 World Cup semi-final to Russia in extra-time, the Three Lions won back-to-back Euros semi-finals against Denmark in 2020 and the Netherlands in 2024, but final defeats against Italy and Spain denied them from bringing football home on both occasions.
A 42.8% win ratio in major tournament semi-finals leaves much to be desired heading into the Argentina clash, but they've won both of their last two and that should give Thomas Tuchel's side some optimism on Wednesday night.
