England predicted XI to face Mexico in World Cup round of 16

England scraped past DR Congo on Wednesday to set up a round of 16 encounter with Mexico.

Held at the famous Azteca Stadium, the weather forecast looks cool enough, but England will be tested by the altitude in Mexico City, with the game played at 2,240 metres above sea level -- nearly twice the height of Ben Nevis.

Thomas Tuchel faced plenty of scrutiny over his squad selection prior to the World Cup and has faced even more since the tournament began.

The injury to Reece James seemed to surprise nobody but Tuchel himself, and the decision not to call up a right-back following Tino Livramento's absence looked even more questionable with Djed Spence struggling against DR Congo.

The back line may remain the same owing to a lack of options. Djed Spence was hooked for Eberechi Eze with Declan Rice shifting to right-back, but the Tottenham man may keep his place with Reece James likely still injured and the game coming too soon for Jarell Quansah.

Tuchel does however have the option of fielding John Stones in the heart of defence and moving Ezri Konsa to right-back.

Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson should therefore retain their places in midfield. In attack, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane will start their fifth consecutive World Cup game, but Tuchel has decisions to make regarding his wide men.

Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford's best performances have both come off the bench in the World Cup, and the Barcelona man may have earned himself a starting berth with his cameo against DR Congo.

Bukayo Saka was rested for the start of the Congo game as he manages his fitness, and while Tuchel might want to keep the Arsenal man as an option from the bench as one of his 'finishers', it would be a gamble to start Noni Madueke.

Predicted England XI to face Mexico

Pickford, Spence, Konsa, Guehi, O'Reilly, Anderson, Rice, Saka, Bellingham, Gordon, Kane.
