Drivers to have won in Formula 1 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of motorsports most prestigious races, so much so that some drivers make the switch from Formula 1 into endurance racing to be a part of the spectacle.

Only a handful of them have registered wins across the two, and even fewer can boast of a World Drivers' Championship and Le Mans victory.

To go even further, only one man has ever captured motorsports Triple Crown - consisting of the F1 Monaco Grand Prix, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Indianapolis 500.

Drivers to have won the F1 World Drivers Championship and Le Mans

Graham Hill

The ONLY man to have won the Triple Crown of motor racing, Graham Hill is one of the greatest to ever do it.

Hill won two World Drivers' Championships in 1962 and 1968, earning the nickname 'Mr Monaco' thanks to his five victories in the principality.

Indy500 was completed between the two championships, victory in the USA coming in 1966 before completing the Triple Crown in 1972, with victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans at the tenth time of asking.

Fernando Alonso

The only active driver two legs into the Triple Crown, Fernando Alonso is 20 years into a spectacular career.

Another two time F1 World Champion (2005 & 2006), the Spaniard has won twice in Monaco (2006 & 2007) and Le Mans (2018 & 2019).

He was also leading the Indy500 for 27 laps on his debut in 2017 but had to retire due to engine failure.

He tried again in 2018 and 2019 but couldn't hit the same heights, it remains to be seen whether he will return for another go.

Mike Hawthorn

In 1958, Mike Hawthorn became the first British Formula One World Champion, beating Stirling Moss to the title by a solitary point despite only winning one race of the eleven on the calendar.

Winning a total of three Grands Prix across seven seasons in the sport, the Yorkshireman also triumphed at Le Mans in 1955 driving for Jaguar.

Phil Hill

Phil Hill is one of two American drivers to have won the F1 World Championship, taking the honours in 1961 as part of an eight year career in which he won three races.

It was in endurance racing where the Miami-born man really made a name for himself though, winning three times in the 24 Hours of Le Mans across 14 attempts.

Remarkably, he retired in every single one of his other 11 attempts at Circuit de la Sarthe.

Jochen Rindt

Jochen Rindt won the 1970 F1 World Drivers' Championship driving for Lotus, becoming the first and only driver to have ever won the award posthumously.

Just a year into his Formula One career in 1965, he took time away to race at Le Mans, taking the victory for the North American Racing Team.
