The 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of the most prestigious motorsport events on the calendar and the one race every driver dreams of winning.
Held on the 13.626 km Circuit de la Sarthe in France, Le Mans is the ultimate endurance race, testing the speed and durability of machine and driver to the extreme.
Since the first race back in 1923, there have been 152 triumphant drivers and 25 winning manufacturers across the 93 editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Nearly all of the years until 1985 (except 1977, 1979 and 1983) featured two drivers per entry before it became the norm to have three drivers per car from 1985 onwards.
Tom Kristensen is the most successful driver in Le Mans history having won the event nine times, including six victories in succession from 2000.
The Dane was first victorious in 1997 alongside Michele Alboreto and Stefan Johansson for Porsche, and he returned to the winner's step in 2000 for Audi alongside Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro.
The trio forged a prolific partnership, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans three years running before a brief switch to Bentley in 2003 where he triumphed alongside Rinaldo Capello and Guy Smith.
Back in the Audi R8, Kristensen was victorious again in 2004 and 2005 prior to winning in 2008 in the Audi R10 with Capello and Allan McNish. Kristensen's ninth and final triumoh was in 2013 as he partnered McNish again and Loic Duval in the Audi R18 e-tron quattro.
Luigi Chinetti is the oldest Le Mans winner; he was 47 years, 11 months and 9 days old when he won partnered Peter Mitchell Thompson to glory in 1949 for Ferrari. Former Formula 1 driver Alexander Wurz is the event's youngest winner; he was 22 years, 4 months and 1 day old when he won the 1996 race for Porsche.
There have been a number of drivers who have competed in F1 to win Le Mans. In recent years, Robert Kubica, Nico Hulkenberg, Kamui Kobayashi, Antonio Giovinazzi, Sebastien Buemi and Brendon Hartley have all emerged victorious, while two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso won the prestigious endurance race two years in a row in 2018 and 2019.
