DFB-Pokal: Dates, format, prize money, previous winners & more

Founded in 1935, the DFB-Pokal is Germany's national cup competition and actually predates the Bundesliga by 28 years.

Initially known as the Tschammerpokal, the competition was re-instated as the DFB-Pokal in 1952, existing in its current guise ever since.

Here is everything you need to know about German football's second most prestigious trophy.

Dates

The 2026/207 DFB Pokal is set to begin on 21st August 2026, with the final scheduled to take place on 29th May 2027 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

  • First round: 21st August – 2nd September 2026
  • Second round: 27th – 28th October 2026
  • Round of 16: 1st – 2nd December 2026
  • Quarter-finals: 2nd –10th February 2027
  • Semi-finals: 20th – 21st April 2027
  • Final: 29th May 2027

Format

In total, 64 teams enter the DFB-Pokal. These are made up of the 18 teams from the Bundesliga, 18 teams from the 2. Bundesliga and the top four clubs from the previous season of the 3. Liga.

The rest of the numbers are made up by the 24 representatives of the regional associations of the DFB, most of whom qualify through the previous season's Verbandspokal.

All 64 teams enter the DFB-Pokal in the first round, but are split into two pots. The 18 Bundesliga clubs and the top 14 clubs from the previous season's 2. Bundesliga are in one pot, and draw one team from the other pot.

All ties take place over one leg.

Prize Money

According to the DFB website, a total of €74.2 million was awarded in the 2025/26 DFB-Pokal and money for the 2026/27 season is likely to be similar, with the winners pocketing €11 million over the course of the competition.

For reaching the first round, clubs will be awarded €209,453, with the prize money roughly doubling for each round of the competition.
