Chelsea crowned Women's Super League champions for sixth successive season

Emma Hayes' reign may have ended but Chelsea Women's empire remains.

The Blues clinched their sixth successive Women's Super League title on Wednesday in Sonia Bampastor's first season in charge after she succeeded the legendary Hayes last summer.

A 1-0 success over Manchester United, coupled with Arsenal's 5-2 defeat to Aston Villa, saw Chelsea win the league with two matches to spare.

Women's Super League

Despite being dismantled by Barcelona Women in their UEFA Women's Champions League semi-final, it's been a memorable maiden campaign for Bompastor after steering Chelsea to WSL glory.

While league success has not been unusual for the Blues in recent years, Bompastor's outfit are on the verge of an unprecedented accomplishment.

The Women's Super League has witnessed several undefeated seasons but none over the course of 22 matches, which Chelsea can achieve if they avoid defeat in their concluding fixtures against Tottenham Women and Liverpool Women.

Where many wondered if Bompastor would encounter teething issues as she took the reins of the defending champions, the former Lyon head coach hit the ground running.

Chelsea chalked up nine wins in a row to commence the WSL campaign, which included the hammerings of Crystal Palace, Tottenham and Everton along with the vital victories against title rivals Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United.

It said a great deal about the lofty expectations set at Cobham that the Blues were extremely frustrated at dropping points at home to West Ham, while Chelsea's resilience shone through when salvaging points away at Leicester City and Brighton.

On top of the opportunity to go undefeated in the Women's Super League, Chelsea will contest the Women's FA Cup final with the chance to achieve the domestic Treble.

The Blues have achieved the feat only once before in 2020/21 and after conquering Manchester City in the Women's League Cup, victory over Manchester United at Wembley will see Bompastor's outfit etch their names into the history books.
