Bradford City are pursuing a deal to sign Preston North End forward Michael Smith this summer.
After being promoted from League Two in the 2024/25 campaign, Bradford launched another promotion challenge in League One last season.
They eventually came up short as they suffered a 2-0 aggregate defeat to Bolton Wanderers in the semi-finals, with the Trotters going on to beat Stockport County to secure promotion.
Bradford are in the market for a new striker following the conclusion of the loan deals for Ethan Wheatley and Paul Mullin, while fans favourite Andy Cook has also been released.
Alan Nixon has reported that Bradford are looking to fill the gap with the acquisition of Preston forward Smith.
Kayden Jackson, Will Swan and Stephen Humphrys are the only attacking options remaining that the club and the potential arrival of Smith would add some valuable experience.
Smith arrived at Deepdale last summer and played 37 Championship games last season, but he only returned a modest total of three goals.
Smith was more consistent in front of goal during previous spells at Rotherham United and Sheffield Wednesday, particularly at League One level.
Now aged 34, Smith may find his game time limited this season and the opportunity to join a potential promotion push at Bradford could appeal.
