Birmingham City have commenced talks with Serie B outfit Palermo over a deal for left-back Kristoffer Lund.
According to a report from Danish media outlet Bold, the Blues are considering a permanent deal for the defender as they look to address the void left by the exit of Kai Wagner earlier this month.
Wagner returned to his previous club Philadelphia Union in the MLS due to personal reasons just six months after joining Birmingham in a deal worth £2m.
Chris Davies has two left-backs on his books in Alex Cochrane and Lee Buchanan, but with Buchanan returning from a second significant injury lay-off, the club are eager to strengthen their options in the position.
Born in Denmark but capped seven times by the United States national team, Lund spent the previous season on loan at FC Köln, where he made 33 appearances in the Bundesliga.
A report from Kicker stated Köln had an option to sign Lund on a permanent basis for approximately £1.8m but opted against tying down the Danish-American, with the German club instead signing Gideon Mensah on a free from Auxerre.
Lund started his career with FC Midtjylland in Denmark before moving to Esbjerg and then BK Häcken in Sweden, where he won the Allsvenskan and Swedish Cup.
The versatile 24-year-old, who is capable of operating as a left-sided midfielder, joined Palermo in August 2023 and was soon recognised by Gregg Berhalter in the USMNT setup, receiving his first international cap in a friendly against Uzbekistan.
Lund made 72 appearances across two seasons with Palermo, but their failure to achieve promotion to Serie A resulted in his loan move to Köln.
With Palermo stuck in Serie B for a fourth consecutive season, the Rosanero are open to offers for Lund and Birmingham are at the front of the queue to secure his signature.
