10 Most Famous Boxers of All Time

Discover the names of the 10 most famous male boxers of all time.

Boxing is the sport of the masses, practised from the public schools to the gyms of the projects and neglected areas of all major cities.

The speed, skill and bravery of the best have inspired their successors and those who've never laced a glove in equal measure.

An early disclaimer, with some of the best not on this list, notably Roberto Duran, while George Foreman's culinary appliances aren't enough to get him the nod.

Anthony Joshua, meanwhile, is famous, but his appeal is on the slide.

Here is our rundown of the most famous boxers of all-time.

10. Tyson Fury

He may not be everyone's favourite, but Tyson Fury has put heavyweight boxing back on the map in the last decade.

Still to fight Anthony Joshua, unlike AJ, his legacy won't be impacted if the bout never takes place, for he was the man who blew the division open by beating Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 before proving too good in his trilogy with Deontay Wilder.

Back-to-back defeats to Oleksandr Usyk in 2024 may yet prove his final appearances, but those two are the only defeats on his record.

Whether he retires or not, Fury's outspoken nature ensures he will remain a prominent voice in the sport.

9. Oscar De La Hoya

For '90s kids, the name Oscar De La Hoya had almost mythical status, but the sport's wider international distribution allowed fans to see more of his later fights.

In retirement, his Golden Boy Promotions company has kept him on our screens. A six-weight champion, most latterly at Middleweight in 2004, he never dodged the other leading fighters of his generation.

The owner of arguably the most vicious left hook in the sport's history, De La Hoya's myth lives on.

8. Rocky Marciano

Never a fighter for the purists during his 50s heyday, Rocky Marciano was known for his pulverising punching power and was good enough to permanently retire while still world heavyweight champion.

In 1951, Marciano was the first man to knock out Joe Louis in 15 years.

And, of course, his backstory and everyman style saw him serve as one of the main inspirations for Sylvester Stallone's iconic film series.

7. Canelo Alvarez

Recognisable for his red hair, Mexican Saul Alvarez is almost universally known by his nickname, the Spanish word for cinnamon, 'Canelo'.

Only Dmitry Bivol and Floyd Mayweather have beaten Canelo in a 19-year professional career, while he also came out on top of his trilogy with Gennadiy Golovkin.

Fast and aggressive, his powers may be waning, but his look makes this four-weight champ instantly recognisable the world over.

6. Manny Pacquiao

Almost inevitably, Manny Pacquiao finds himself behind Floyd Mayweather in our list.

A multi-division world champion who has held belts in the 2000s, 2010s and 2020s, Pacquiao beat Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto along the way.

Able to cut through an opponent's defence with his ability to land blows from all angles, his fame has also been enhanced by forays into politics.

5. Floyd Mayweather

A 50-0 record helped five-weight champion Floyd Mayweather dominate the pound-for-pound rankings during his peak.

With immaculate defence and brilliant hand speed, 'Money' has managed wins over stellar names such as Pacquiao, De La Hoya, Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton and Juan Manuel Marquez.

In 2012, he was the world's highest-paid athlete, a feat repeated in 2014, 2015 and 2018.

Supposedly retired, he remains a draw, having even fought former MMA champion Conor McGregor in 2017. An exhibition against Mike Tyson is also in the works.

4. Ray Robinson

'Sugar' was among boxing's early showmen, happily displaying all of his skills to the delight of his adoring crowd during the 1940s, 50s and beyond.

That may have been what helped him remain at the top so long, with his middleweight and welterweight championship reigns lasting a combined 14 years.

Robinson also had more fights against world champions or Hall of Famers than anyone else (25), and was undoubtedly a key inspiration for those who followed.

3. Joe Louis

To those who saw him in the ring, Joe Louis was frightening from the early 1930s onwards. Faster, more intelligent and more ruthless than his rivals, the Alabama fighter made a record 25 successful lineal championship defences.

However, his actions away from the ring also brought him to public attention, as he donated purses to the war effort and fought against segregation, among other causes.

That said, Louis' consistency in speaking up shows that his actions weren't driven by fame.

2. Mike Tyson

Few have earned a reputation like Mike Tyson, whose electrifying bouts of aggression enabled him to become the undisputed heavyweight champion for two years.

Tyson's notoriety went before him and his fame continues, starring in the Hangover film franchise, among other appearances, and in November 2024, 'fighting' social media icon Jake Paul.

His allure remains as such that there are plans for him to take on Mayweather in Spring 2026.

1. Muhammad Ali

No matter who you are, you've heard of Muhammad Ali. His blend of charisma, controversy and talent led to him becoming 'The Greatest'.

The complete heavyweight, packing power, speed and footwork, he was almost untouchable in his prime.

His two wins over Sonny Liston in 1964, followed a decade later by beating Joe Frazier and then the 'Rumble in the Jungle' against the undefeated, undisputed champion George Foreman, remain standouts in the sport's storied history.

Ali's 'rope-a-dope' tactics against Foreman showcased his evolution with age and helped cement his spot as one of the most famous boxers - and iconic sportsmen - of all time.
