Will DeVonta Smith Play This Week? Week 9 vs. NY Giants

DeVonta Smith has been watching his team play from the sidelines that last few weeks, and his Week 9 status is still up in the air.

DeVonta Smith initially suffered a hamstring injury during training camp, and it has plagued him ever since. Smith played in the first three games of the season before sitting out Weeks 4 and 5. He then returned against the Carolina Panthers in Week 6 but has since missed two more games.

In four games, Smith has caught 26 of 41 targets for 310 yards and two touchdowns. Unfortunately, the former Heisman Trophy winner has been inactive for four of the Philadelphia Eagles’ six consecutive losses.

The Eagles will proceed with extreme caution when it comes to Smith. The team is dealing with significant injuries to key offensive players and they do not appear to be competing for the NFC East title this season, particularly with Tanner McKee at quarterback.

Will DeVonta Smith play this week?

Smith’s official status for Week 9 against the New York Giants remains undetermined, but we should have a better idea of whether the 27-year-old will play on Sunday if he takes part in practice this week.

Smith did not practise in any capacity last week but could return to limited practice this week.

Philadelphia Eagles Notable Injuries

The Eagles are now 2–6 after winning their first two games and are expected to be without quarterback Jalen Hurts for the remainder of the season as he deals with blood clots. The Eagles have not showed signs of making any changes at quarterback since the injury, so Tanner McKee is going to be the starter moving forward which hurts Smith's ceiling even if he's healthy.

Running back Saquon Barkley has also been dealing with nagging injuries. Barkley has missed two games this season and has spent significant portions of four others on the sidelines receiving treatment for back and hamstring injuries.

Which Eagles receivers are stepping up with Smith injured?

No wide receiver has clearly separated himself from the rest of the group while Smith has been sidelined. Darius Cooper led the team in receiving yards in Weeks 4 and 5, but rookie wide receiver Makai Lemon has led the team in yards over the past two weeks.

Outside of those two young pass-catchers, Dallas Goedert and Dontayvion Wicks are the only other players playing significant roles in the Eagles’ offence.

Rookie tight end Eli Stowers missed the first six weeks of the season but caught all three of his targets for 53 yards on Sunday night against the Washington Commanders. Stowers was a second-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and could emerge as a reliable target down the stretch.
