Tallest Goalies in NHL History: Cooper Black Tops the List

Goalies are getting taller and taller every year in the NHL, and Cooper Black just made history by becoming the tallest goalie to ever appear in an NHL game.

The size of the net has not changed in hockey, but goals can be hard to come by when teams put a massive goalie in the crease. Although size helps block the goal, goaltenders also have to have incredibly fast reflexes and flexibility to be truly elite.

Cooper Black Becomes Tallest Goalie in NHL History

Florida Panthers Goaltender Cooper Black made NHL history on Thursday, October 22, becoming the tallest goalie to ever play in an NHL game.

Standing 6-feet 9-inches tall, Black joined the Panthers in 2024 and played primarily for the team's AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers. He was then called up to make his NHL debut against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Black's debut was entirely impressive, making 17 saves on 20 shots (.850 save percentage) and conceded three goals in the 4-0 loss.
