In NHL history, 18 goaltenders have combined to score a total of 21 goals, with two instances coming in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The New York Rangers' Igor Shesterkin added his name to this short list of netminders after tucking the puck into the Tampa Bay Lightning's empty net on October 1, 2026.
This incredible feat occurred in the Rangers' home opener at Madison Square Garden, marking the first time a goaltender had found the net since Ilya Sorokin did so for the New York Islanders on March 1, 2025.
Shesterkin became only the 13th netminder to score on purpose, while the remaining eight goals were credited after the player touched the puck last before the opposing team conceded an own goal.
The first goaltender to score on a shot attempt was Ron Hextall of the Philadelphia Flyers on December 8, 1987.
