Sabrina Ionescu: Height, Weight, Playing Style, Strengths, Achievements

Sabrina Ionescu has developed into one of the WNBA's biggest stars since joining the league as the No. 1 overall pick in 2020.

From regularly stuffing the stat sheet at the University of Oregon to nearly beating Stephen Curry in a three-point shootout at 2024 NBA All-Star Saturday Night, it's been a whirlwind career so far for the New York Liberty guard.

Sabrina Ionescu doesn't have towering height or blazing speed, but she has more than enough quickness to blow by defenders and strength to fight through contact when driving to the rim. She can leap to block the occasional outside shot, and she always plays under control.

Sabrina Ionescu averaged a career-high in points during the 2024 WNBA season, but it was her least efficient campaign since her second professional season. Her three-point shooting percentage dropped from a career-best 44.8 percent in '23 to 33.3 percent in '24, despite taking just 0.5 more shots from beyond the arc per game.

That being said, she still played a major role in leading her team to the WNBA Championship. She got slightly more efficient in 11 postseason games, averaging 16.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.6 steals while shooting 39.6 percent overall and 36.3 percent from deep.

Ionescu had two games with 30+ points in 2024, the first of which was a 31-point, nine-assist performance against the then-reigning WNBA Champion Las Vegas Aces, where she shot 11/19 overall and 6/11 from three. A month later, she scored 30 with six rebounds and five assists against the Connecticut Sun.

In the WNBA Finals against the Minnesota Lynx, Ionescu averaged 12.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 1.8 steals while shooting 29.6 percent overall and 24.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Sabrina Ionescu Playing Style and Strengths

Sabrina Ionescu is a modern point guard in the sense that she can have a scoring outburst or dish out double-digit assists — or both — on any given night.

Ionescu gained a reputation as a triple-double machine in college because she had 16 of them in her final two seasons at Oregon. She has posted just seven triple-doubles as a professional, but that's largely because she's surrounded by better players in the WNBA.

The guard forms a big three with New York Liberty teammates Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones, who both have won the WNBA MVP Award. Ionescu usually facilitates for them, often running pick-and-roll plays to create mismatches and easy buckets at the rim.

Ionescu can also shoot from deep, and she doesn't need much space to get shots off. Over half of her field goal attempts have come from beyond the arc in three of her four full WNBA seasons, and the vast majority of those threes come from above the break. Almost 80 percent of her threes were assisted in 2024, indicating she likes to try and set up Stewart, Jones, and others within the flow of the offense before they swing the ball back to her for a usually open three.

Sabrina Ionescu in the WNBA Landscape

With 1.4 million Instagram followers and the second-most-worn shoe by NBA players in the 2024/25 season, Sabrina Ionescu is one of the best-known WNBA players.

Her follower count is the fourth-largest among WNBA players, and her sneaker, the Nike Sabrina 2, is beloved by basketball players everywhere for its comfort, cushion, and lightweight feel. The only shoe worn more often by NBA players in 24/25 was the legendary Nike Kobe 6. She was close with Kobe Bryant before his tragic passing, having been coached by him in one-on-one training sessions.

In 2022, Ionescu was named to Forbes' 30 Under 30 list for sports. In December 2024, she signed a deal with the Unrivaled basketball league, founded by Napheesa Collier and Liberty teammate Breanna Stewart, with a salary that reportedly put Ionescu "in a category of her own."
