The Baltimore Ravens have reached a crossroads this week, and are likely to be incredibly active on the quarterback market.
With a 4–4 record, the Baltimore Ravens are down to their third-string quarterback, Joe Fagnano, unless they can acquire a veteran backup this week. The Ravens will face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 9 after suffering three consecutive losses to AFC rivals.
Lamar Jackson returned to action last week against the Buffalo Bills after missing three games with an ankle injury, but suffered a thumb injury to his throwing hand during the opening drive. The injury kept Jackson out for the remainder of the game and will require surgery, prompting the Ravens to place him on injured reserve.
Backup quarterback Tyler Huntley started the three games Jackson missed and entered the game after Jackson’s injury. Unfortunately, Huntley also left the game with a turf-toe injury that is expected to keep him out for multiple weeks.
With the first two quarterbacks on the depth chart sidelined for extended periods, the Ravens relied on undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano. The former University of Maine walk-on also injured his ankle during the game, but the injury was not serious enough to force him out of his first NFL appearance.
Fagnano, 25, completed just 10 of 21 pass attempts against the Bills for 91 yards. He also threw an interception, suggesting that he might not be the right man to start for a team that entered the season with Super Bowl aspirations.
With Fagnano and Kedon Slovis the only healthy quarterbacks on the roster, Jesse Minter’s team is likely to contact teams around the league in the hope of trading for a starting quarterback.
Slovis was signed from the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad this week.
The Ravens will likely search for a veteran backup capable of learning a new system quickly, although they could also opt for a younger player with greater potential upside. Possible veteran options include Joe Flacco and Jacoby Brissett.
A high-upside option would be trading for Anthony Richardson. The Colts backup is a former first-round pick who has a similar playing style to Lamar Jackson. The Ravens would be able to run the same type of offense they have used with Lamar in recent seasons, rather than relying on a quarterback who is unable to make plays with his legs.
Mac Jones is one of the best backups in the NFL, and Baltimore would need to be convinced that it could compete for the Super Bowl before giving up significant draft capital to acquire him.
