Rajon Rondo is Trading Basketball for Flag Football

Rajon Rondo has gone viral this week, but its not for something basketball fans would expect.

A video clip of Rajon Rondo playing quarterback for a flag football team has been circulating the internet, claiming that the former NBA Champion is the No. 1 ranked flag football quarterback in the country.

Is Rajon Rondo the best flag football quarterback?

Although the viral clip stated that Rondo is the No.1 Ranked flag football quarterback in the USA, this is untrue.

The International Flag Football team posted earlier this month that Rondo would be playing professional flag football, but he is not officially ranked on any major website.

USA Football currently lists Darrell "Housh Doucette III and Nico Caseres as the men's national team quarterbacks, and Doucette III has been the team's starter at the position since 2020.

2028 Summer Olympics

Will Rajon Rondo play at the Olympics?

Flag football will make its Olympic debut in 2028, and there will be stiff competition to make the team. Although it's not impossible, it is very unlikely that Rondo will feature at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, CA.

Rondo did tell Matt Barnes on the "All the Smoke" podcast that USA Football had extended him an invite to tryout for the national team, but a tryout is far from making the Olympic team.

Last year he NFL also announced that they would allow players to play in the Olympics, so between established members of Team USA - Doucette III and Caseres - as well as NFL competition, Rondo will have to be unbelievable at the position to make the team.

NFL quarterbacks Jayden Daniels, Kyler Murray, and Joe Burrow have expressed interest in playing flag football at the Olympic level, as well as Tyreek Hill, Justin Jefferson, Mike Evans, and many other skill position players.

Rondo, 40, will be 42-years-old at the time of the 2028 Summer Olympics, so competing with younger players will be difficult for the former Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers point guard.

Rajon Rondo's NBA Career

Rajon Rondo was selected 21st overall in the 2006 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns, and immediately traded to the Boston Celtics.

Rondo had a very productive 16 year career, winning two NBA Championships (2008, 2020) with the Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers respectively, and was one of the best passers to grace the association.

In his career Rondo played for nine teams, spending the longest and best part of his career in Boston. He was a four-time All-Star (2010-2013), made the All-NBA 3rd Team in 2011/12, and made four All-Defensive Teams. All while a member of the Celtics.

The point guard also led the league in assists per game three times, which is the part of his game that translates best to flag football.
