Open Championship 2026 Purse: Largest Prize Money in Tournament History

The 2026 Open Championship will feature a record purse, with the R&A increasing the total prize money to $17.5 million for the final major championship of the season.

The prize fund represents a $500,000 increase from last year, giving each player who survives the cut an opportunity to take home a larger payday compared to last year.

While the championship has always carried prestige as golf's oldest major, it remains the smallest purse among golf's four majors.

The Masters tournament features a $22.5 million purse, while the U.S. Open also offers $22.5 million. The PGA Championship sits at $20.5 million.

The difference highlights how The Open's appeal has historically been built around its tradition and history. However, the R&A's continued purse increases show the championship is keeping pace with golf's evolving landscape.

Last year, Scottie Scheffler earned $3.1 million for capturing the Open Championship title This year's champion will see an increased payday taking home a record $3.2 million.
