Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Oneil Cruz is expected to miss significant time after being diagnosed with a left hand injury.
The injury occurred during a headfirst slide against the Atlanta Braves and was initially believed to be minor.
Cruz tried to continue playing, but increasing tightness and discomfort in his hand eventually forced him to miss the series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
It was found that Oneil Cruz has a fourth and fifth-metacarpal non-displaced fractures in his left hand.
The Pirates placed Cruz on the 10-day injured list on June 8.
The loss is a major blow to Pittsburgh's lineup, as Cruz has been one of the Club's top offensive performers this season.
Through his first 66 games, he was batting .264 with 14 home runs, 44 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases.
With no official return date set, Jake Mangum is expected to receive most of the playing time in center field as Cruz recovers.
